Cold Wet Weather & Big Fat Rainbows

June 4, 2010:

Well the fishing was tough … and it was cold … and wet … and it lasted the whole day cept for a 15 minute reprieve when the sun showed it’s face around noon … and did I mention the fishing was slow?  But plans were made days before and by God we were gunna stick to them come hell or high water – which it kinda felt like by the end of the day.

The day started with breakfast at a local diner for Dan, Wayne and Peeler, followed shortly by the bumpy road into Lunker lake, a 3900 foot water body nestled just off hwy 5 about one hour from Kamloops, where they met up with JeFF, myself and  eventually Darcy and  Ron. The weather was ugly but we persevered as planned and everyone got set up and hit the water.

JeFF and I spent the first while just cruising around the lake looking for signs of insect activity – which we found to be almost non existent except for a few tiny midges here and there. With not much to go on we started with the meat and potoatoes and flogged the water for a few hours with different varieties of shrimp, leeches, bloodworms and chironomid pupa – all to no avail! Then it happened … just as we though all was lost JeFF’s indicator plunges into the depths and the fight is on! It didn’t last long however as the feisty bow threw the hook on her final leap from the water leaving us with one final look before disappearing forever. We guessed her to be six to seven pounds.

Then, just as we were settling back into our fishing routines, we heard a shout from the other side of the lake. “I think that’s Wayne and Dan” JeFF said. So with out further to do we pulled anchor and made our way towards them arriving just in time to see this:

way to go guys!

Double Header Action for Wayne & Dan!

Followed shortly by this:

very nice Wayne!

Wayne’s 7.2 Pound Beauty Rainbow!

and then this:

beauty fish Dan!

Dan’s Monster Penask Rainbow!

Holy chit! Not only a double header but a monster fish double header! All of a sudden the rain and cold weather didn’t seem that bad! In fact, I don’t think we even noticed it for a while!

After a few photos both fish were released unharmed and we spent the next few hours trying to top that performance. Unfortunately, a few big tugs and a couple smaller fish were all the group could come up with. Oh well, after that it really didn’t matter!

So that was that. We packed up, had a few pops and a bite to eat and made plans for tomorrow so stay tuned!

Last Day Of May Kamloops Area Lakes Fishing Report

is that all you do is fish?

Adam with his last day of May 2010 rainbow!

May 31, 2010:

Decided to go fishing again today.  Life is good!

Got to the lake around 9:00 and there were already 15 boats anchored up!!!  There were only 2 boats close to my spot so I just drove right past all the boats as they stared at their indicators.  Didn’t see a single person hit a fish as I drove past.

Anchored up, set up for long lining with a KKK and first cast within minutes I had my first fish…thought to myself “its gonna be a good day!”  A little guy so I let him go quickly and second cast, Bang! again.  Nice!

In the end, caught fish steady with the deep water chironomid all throughout the day and broke off 3 fish.  Between my buddy and I we landed between 30 and 40 fish and lost A LOT.  Biggest landed was 4 lbs.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention that throughout the day, all those boats I drove past, I only saw 2 boats get a couple fish…You gotta love days like that!  😉

Another Flyguys Northern Division Fishing Report

nice little piggy Steve!

Another Northern Beauty!

May 30, 2010:

Once the hoards had moved on after the long weekend and all the snow had melted Steve and I headed out mid week hoping for  a bunch of brutes. When we got to the lake we were caught off guard  as it looked like it was turning over. What had happened was all the wet snow( 4 inches) had broken off all the dead reeds and now they were scattered all over the surface. The fishing once again mirrored what was happening around Kamloops..tough sleddin’.

We only landed three although I snapped off three on 6lb tippet moved to 8lb and snapped off a couple more. Reports from guys on Thursday and Friday were dismal so it seems this trophy lake has returned to it’s stingy ways. I’ll head back near the end of June for the massive Travellers sedge hatch.

oink!

The one fish we kept I cleaned on the boat and it was stuffed with 25-30 dragons. Kicking myself for not taking a picture of all those dragons on top of my cooler. We got all our hits on dragons and mini black leeches.

Anyways reports  from now on will be from rivers, creeks and lakes with names.

Flyguys Northern Division over and out.

Cariboo May Long Weekend Fishing Report

very nice!

Now that's a Kokanee!

May Long Weekend 2010:

Well, we arrived at our May long destination on Friday and the rain started to pour down.  This didn’t discourage us though as we decided to go out for an evening fish before setting up camp.  We rigged up the down riggers and started trolling. Right away we got into 5 Lake Trout, all the same size around 3 pounds…just little guys.

The next day we tried our luck at chironomid fishing.  We woke up to sooo many chironomids in the air that it was hard to breath!!!  So we quickly set up and ventured out but to our avail, it started SNOWING (Yup this is May long).  The snow came down for over half of the day straight and then turned to rain and it was a complete white out.  We tried chiro fishing still but could only catch a chill.

Later on, we set up the secret Kokanee combo, and nailed Kokanee all afternoon long.  The biggest being 3.1 lbs!

All in all, it was a very fun trip with lots and lots of Kokanee, many Lakers, and even managed to jig up a few big Burbot in the mix of things.  Not a single rainbow was even seen though.  Was a great weekend!!

The rest of the fishing pictures can be viewed on our 2010 Gallery page so  check em out!

May Long Weekend Kamloops Highlands Lakes Fishing Report

brrrrrr

Yup, that's snow!

May 23, 2010:

In our attempt to avoid the crowds this May long weekend, we ventured out to a couple little gems hidden in the Kamloops highlands in search of feisty Penasks. With both lakes over 4200 feet, and with the cool weather we’ve been having lately, it reminded us of fall fishing – complete with the snow! 😯

Needless to say, the fishing was on & off (kinda like our rain gear) as the barometer went up and down like a yoyo, but regardless we did manage fairly steady action by long lining chironomid pupae. The good news is, despite the spotty weather, that we did manage a few nice Penask bows that kept us highly entertained with their aerial and acrobatic displays! 🙂

yeah baby!

2010 May Long Weekend Rainbow

As mentioned above, the ticket to all our success this weekend was the chironomid pupa – specifically chromies like the KKK. Although there were other colours evident in the throat pump samples, the chromies far out numbered the rest and therefore, not surprisingly, it was the imitation that took the most fish. Close second to the KKK were the the static cone chromie, the black n red, the little red, and the copper brown.

ouch!

A Well Used (beheaded) Static Cone Chromie

Stay tuned for future posts from our fly tying category where we hope to provide the tying instructions for the above mentioned flys! 😉

So that’s it folks, another typical Kamloops area mixed bag of weather May long weekend. Technically, I guess there is still a day of it left, but since the weather is forecasted to remain the same I think it’s fair to assume the fishing will as well – not a bad thing as long as your patient enough to wait out the lows and capitalize on the up swings!

As usual, you can find all of this years fishing pictures on our 2010 gallery page!

On a related note, Tunkwa & Leighton lakes were also spotty fishing over the long weekend most likely due to the weather as well.  Chironomid fishing seemed to slow down a bit and he anglers who trolled were doing bests. Throat samples should the trout to be absolutely stuffed with scuds, hardly any chironies despite the strong hatches going on. Anglers that keyed in on this switch in diet were doing well.  Scud patterns slow trolled or drifted were effective with fish to 26 inches! As the weather stabilizes we should see the fishing turn more consistent again. Oh, and it was also nice to see the first signs of mayflies hatching!

And on the way home we checked into Logan lake only to hear the same old story … bad weather equals bad fishing but those who were persistent were catching fish. I would bet that we would have had the same results no matter which lake we chose to fish this weekend! 🙁 Oh well, keep your fingers crossed for better weather and better fishing.

Tight lines …….JeFF

Fishing Report – Flyguys Northern Division!

yikes!

Flyguys North - yeah baby!

May 19, 2010:

Well after 3 weeks of straight graveyards it was definitely time to go FISHIN’. The ice had been off this lake 14 days and we we’re a little worried about turnover. The great thing about this lake is that it has springs feeding it so it comes post ice-off pre-mixed a little bit. The fishing reports had been unbelievable but just like the lakes down there last weekend the fishing was good not great. All the fish hooked were big though, smallest being 3 lbs!

holy fatso batman!!!

Flyguys North - holy crap!!!

The fly of choice (best producer) was….you guessed it a mini black leech. Other flies that worked were mini maroon leech and green/red chironomids. The one fish kept was stuffed with dragons! Will definitely follow that lead next time out.

Weather this weekend calls for highs of 4C and rain/snow mix. Ah life in the North. Plans are mid next week a sneak away fish. Will keep you guys posted.

P.S. the big ones were 10 and 12 lbs!

Salmon and Scuitto Lake Fishing Reports

An Early Morning on Scuitto Lake

May 18, 2010:

Hey guys,

I fished Scuitto and Salmon Lake this weekend.

Scuitto fishing was fair with lots of chironomid action.

Salmon Lake was lights out! I fish this lake regularly and this year has been the best I can remember in 10 years. My first fish Sunday morning was 25”. From about 10:00 – 12:00 it was a fish every cast and I don’t remember a time when such a high percentage of the fish were consistently in the 3 – 4 lb range as I experienced Sunday. The fish were aggressive in taking the KKK and Black n red chironomids.

Mid May 2010 Kamloops Area Lakes Fishing Report

Pete & Adam with a chromer mid May Rainbow!

 May 17, 2010:

Ok the weekend reports are in and here’s what we know:

This past weekend, in general, has fished slower than the week leading into it, especially at the lakes between the 3500 – 4000 foot elevation mark. Not sure if it was the weather or what but the slow down was consistent across all reports. However, although it was a bit slower, there were still many fish being caught!

In the Roche lake area, Bleeker has been fishing good with fish to five pounds in the shallows using chironomids. Horseshoe and Roche itself have been slow but steady both producing fish from a two to six pounds on chironomids, leeches, shrimp and damsels. Ernest and Hosli have been slower than average for this time of year but some luck has been had trolling leeches on the shoals. On the outer skirts of the park, Campbell and Scuitto continue to fish well with fish to five pounds on chironomids.

In the Greenstone mountain area both Duffy and Dairy lakes are just starting to come on and should provide some good action for the next month or so. Like most ice just off fishing try your luck with a micro leech under an indicator.

now that's lunch!

Now that's a shore lunch! (or should I say 'boat' lunch)

Moving a bit further west we have heard that chironomids are again the ticket on both Tunkwa and Leighton lakes.  If you like these lakes get there before the pea soup blooms in the water and you should have steady action. Oh, and once the pea soup kicks in try dragging a damsel through it  – but that’s a topic for a different post so stay tuned. 😉

On the other side of the river, Red lake is slowing down but still producing plump rainbows and brookies while Pass is steady on chironies with fish to four pounds. Heffley is still fishing good on chironies and we’ve even heard reports of damsels starting to show. Knouff and Community lakes are now ice off and some fish are being caught trolling big leeches or hanging micros under an indicator.

Not much of report from the highland valley lakes other than to confirm that the ice is off most of them. If anyone has fished any of the lakes in this area please send in a report.

Our final report came in from White lake near Salmon Arm where the are hammering fish to three pounds steady by long lining chironomid pupae.

If you think you’re hearing a lot of the “C” word in this report (chironomid that is) it’s because that’s what catches fish this time of year! If you’re intimidated fishing chironomids please see our chironomid page or our articles on long lining and deep water chironomids on the site and then give it a try and be patient – trust us, once you are on to it you’ll be glad you did!

Well that’s all for now folks. Pick a lake, get out there and catch a fish and send in a report.

…….Rob

Fly Fishing Chironomids
– Full Sink Deep Water Chironomids –

I’ll tell you about my deep-water technique for fly fishing Chironomids and what I’ve discovered about it so far. I am not saying that my approach is “right” or that it is complete (look for the original   BC “deep water chronie fishin” post for some other really excellent tips) Just that what I am about to explain works well for me. I am, humbly, passing this along hoping that you will add your own variations and have another approach to a very productive way of fishing.

Krazy’s Nine Pound Kamloops Area Lakes Rainbow

May 11, 2010:

Today’s lake might sit at about 3600 feet, might be in the Roche lake area and might be named after a certain animals footwear – but then again it might not – and if not, we’d bet money that it’s not that far from there.  😉  Either way it was another productive day of Kamloops chironomid fishing resulting in fish to ……. ready for this ……. NINE pounds!

After yesterdays eight pounder we moved on to different waters not expecting to even come close to that number. We picked another lake known to grow rainbows fast and used our BC Lakes on Google Earth tool to ensure that it had been stocked with the “right” type of fish (can you say triploids) long enough to allow them to reach acceptable weights. We arrived at the lake around 10:00 AM and were very pleased to see that a chironomid hatch was just getting under way.

After unloading the boats and getting set up we were on the water looking for signs of fish and upon locating a few dropped anchors and started fishing. JeFF started with his usual searching chironomid, AKA the KKK,  while I worked a black n red and and Adam worked a leech. The plan was to try and catch a fish, use the throat pump to take a feeding sample, and then fine tune our flies accordingly.

Again as usual, JeFF struck first with a bow that hammered his presentation and immediately took him into his backing. He quickly regained control and about five minutes later brought this beauty rainbow to the net!

alright hamilton!

another day … another beautiful bow!

A quick sample with the throat pump revealed that JeFF didn’t have to fine tune his fly after all but Adam and I should – so we did – and almost immediately we also started getting into some nice rainbows!

After an hour or so of fairly steady catch and release fishing with trout around the two pound mark,  Adam hit a fish that felt like it had some good weight to it and after good few minutes of fight, including a few great runs, pulled this gorgeous bow into the net!

yikes!

Nice plump rainbow Adam!

Fast forward another couple hours of on again off again fishing when finally I hit a fish that felt “better than average” – and that’s exactly what I remember thinking, that it felt “better than average” – until I got it near the boat and all hell broke loose that is! Suddenly it became very clear that this bad boy was quite a bit “better than average” and my heart kicked into high gear as this “submarine”, as JeFF called it, nose dived to the bottom of the lake wear he sat and pulled and tugged and shook his head and generally scared the crap out of me thinking that my little knot was not going to be able to take much more of this pounding! Finally, after what seemed like an hour, I was able to ease this brutes nose into the net and finally get a good look at him. Well all I could say was holy $hit as all of our jaws dropped at the sight of this monster!

holy $hit!

Krazy’s May 11, 2010 Nine Pound Rainbow!

Unbelievable! Just yesterday we managed to land an eight pound bow and had concluded that it would be a long time until we topped that feat and then the very next day we hook into this nine pound beast! The fishing Gods, for reasons that we don’t understand, must be happy with us – or maybe it’s just luck or karma – we’re not sure but we’re definitely not complaining!

So that’s fishing. Sometimes it turns out exactly like you think it will and sometimes nothing like it. One thing we do know, however, is that you won’t catch anything sitting on the couch. Someone once said that “90% of life is just showing up”. A good chunk of what happens in the remaining 10% depends on where you are and we’d prefer it to be on the water! 🙂

…….Krazy

More BIG Kamloops Area Lakes Rainbows

wow!

Krazy’s May 10, 2010 Eight Pound Rainbow!

May 10, 2010:

Well I’m speechless … and tired … this was one of seven bows over the 5 pound mark landed today! Sorry Bob but I think Krazy’s bumped you out of first place! 😉

holy chironomids batman!

I Wonder What They’re Eating?

Needles to say chironomids were the key – we didn’t even have to pump them to see that!!!  Anchored the boat, measured the depth, threw on a KKK and long lined them all day long!  Best action and most fun we’ve had so far this year!

It’s may and the chronies are hatching most everywhere under 4000 feet in the Kamloops area. Visit the stocking charts, pick a mid elevation lakes with good stocking history and give it a go!

Nuff said! 😉

Colin’s BIG Rainbow Day

way to go Colin!

May 8, 2010 – Colin’s Early May Monster Bow

May 8, 2010:

Decided to head out one more time before the busy week ahead of me and I convinced my friend Colin to come along. Colin has been fly fishing for a while but wanted to fine tune his chironomid fishing so we took the advice give in this last flyguy report and stuck to a lake below 3500 feet to try and take advantage of the growing chironomid hatches … and we’re glad we did! 🙂

After getting out there and getting all set up we started fishing in about 12 feet of water. After about 30 minutes without a touch and chironomids hatching all around us we decided to move out into deeper water and anchored up in about 20 feet.  About 20 minutes went by and I decided to switch things up and gave Colin a Krazy black n red to tie on while I stuck with the kkk. I also tried my luck on the other side of the boat while Colin stuck to the same side of the boat that we had been fishing.  All of a sudden the next thing I hear is the line snapping the water and Colin’s rod bent right over.  I knew this was going to be a BIG fish!  After about 5 minutes of fighting this fish, it finally shows it self about 10 feet down and it looks to be a beaut!!  More time goes by and it stays down deep, circling the boat twice.  It would just come up into sight, and then quickly disappear into the darkness of the depths.  Finally, after Colin playing this fish perfectly, I see that it is tiring and I tell Colin to lift his rod up to get the fishes head out of the water and pull it across the surface.  Sure enough, the fish cooperated and the next thing you know it is in the net!  We both look at the fish and it is much larger than we expected.  This one definitely hit up the “all you can eat” buffets down in the depths.  The fish weighed just over six pounds and was Colin’s largest rainbow he had ever caught, so we snapped some pictures and stared at the beast a little longer… What a great day!

May 2010 Edith Lake Kamloops Fishing Report

way to go Gordie!

Gordie with a feisty Edith lake rainbow!

May 7, 2010:

Hard to believe another year has gone by but here we are again at our annual CEP fishing derby  and,  as the title of this report states, this years host lake was Edith!

Edith is a little gem of a lake nestled in the grassland hills behind Knutsford just a mere 15 minutes or so from Kamloops. Edith sits at 3370 feet in elevation and it’s rich waters are known to grow fish fast! Edith is stocked with both rainbows & eastern brook trout, both of which tend to look allot like little footballs due to the abundance of feed in the lake! Edith lake is known for it’s huge gammarus shrimp, gigantic bloodworms and bomber chironomids.

Unfortunately for us, Edith lake summer killed a couple of years back and therefore the majority of the fish there today are only two year old stock and therefore topped out at around the three pound mark. Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a three pound bow,  but cross your fingers that the lake survives for a couple more consecutive years and you can easily expect to be pulling out lunkers in the six pound plus range!

Despite the spotty weather, including the hail storm around noon, the fishing today was fairly consistant. Trollers were hammering fish steady with leech and shrimp patterns while the casters were sparatically successfull with leeches, bloodworms and chironomid pupa patterns. As usual, we were successful with both the black n red & kkk chironomid patterns as well as the Triple F leech tied as a micro in red. With over thirty participants on the water, many of them very decent rods, the top fish produced just topped three pounds and was caught on a bloodworm pattern – congratulations Doug!  🙂

Although chironomids were hatching fairly well through out the entire day, the fish were not on them heavily – you can expect that to change shortly. Our prediction is that the hatches will continue to grow stronger and within a week the fish will be keying in on them almost exclusively – at least for a while.  Keep your eyes open for the bombers and if you see them ignore all the little stuff and long line a big pupa pattern on or near the bottom – you won’t be sorry!  😉

A big thanks to Bob & Peeler for setting up the event (yet again) and to everyone that participated – it was allot of fun! Pictures will be posted on our 2010 Gallery page soon!

May 2010 Kamloops Area Lakes Fishing Report

snow? What snow?

May 2010 – Fishing in the Snow!

May 2, 2010:

Yikes! Snow shmoe – it’s May and the chironomids didn’t seem to care about the weather so we gave it a shot … and it panned out! 🙂

yikes!

Carey’s Big Early May Rainbow!

Beautiful fat bow Carey!

According to the reports coming in, and despite the crazy weather we’ve been having lately, the ice is off most of the lakes under the 4000 foot mark. More good news is that most of the lakes under 3600 have turned and are starting to fish well with lakes like Jocko, Pass, Heffley, Campbell and Scuitto really starting to come on strong! As for the lakes between 3600 and 4000 feet … well … could be good if you catch em right at ice off but could be bad as well … our advice is to stick with the many productive Kamloops area lakes under 3600 for a while yet.

And speaking of productive Kamloops area lakes … last weekends adventures took us to a couple of our favourites where we were fortunate to experience some of the best chironomid fishing that we’ve had so far this year! Using the long lining technique explained on our website, along with the recently discussed black N red and KKK chironomid pupa patterns, we managed to take quite a few porky bows. Throat pump samples revealed that the fish at this level are beginning to feed on chironomid pupae but are not yet gorging on them.

yeah baby!

5 Pound Rainbow on a KKK Chironomid Pupa!

Check out the KKK hanging out of that pigs lip!  Despite the weather it was a great weekend – when you’re catching fish like this you don’t even feel the cold! 😉

The Mexican Fisherman

[embedit snippet=”gas-468×60″]

The Mexican Fisherman

Stop drowning yourself in the pursuit of a material existence in the hopes of some ‘better’ life at the end of the line when the good life is available to you now – everyday! This life philosophy was shared with us by a good friend, a true “flyguy”, and is summed up in the story of the Mexican Fisherman! 😉

[embedit snippet=”gas-468×60″]

The Mexican Fisherman:

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, “only a little while.”

The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The American then asked, “but what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life.”

The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “15-20 years.”

“But what then?”

The American laughed and said that’s the best part. “When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.”

“Millions.. Then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

Nuff said, Go Fishing!

Bob’s End of April Triple Lunker Day

WOW!

Bob’s Six Pound April Bow Ready to be Released!

April 30, 2010:

What a great day! My best ever … got a five pound bow at 10:00 am on a micro leech and then after celebrating and enjoying the moment 15 min later I get another bow that I don’t see but rips me out 75 yards and this guy is without a doubt a bigger fish! ……What a rush but as the saying goes they don’t get big for no reason and this one escapes me.

Another spot and two hours later I get this six pounder that is just a beauty…… only allowed one over 50 so back he goes and is still out there for someone else!

Amazing same fly for all three big fish! I was at the lake by 6:00 am and fished until 4pm and prior to today had two days before this day that I did nothing but finally was rewarded.

…….Bob

PS: I just have to chime in here and let everyone know that although this is a gorgeous fish it is not Bob’s biggest of the year as he already pulled a bigger boy out of the same hole a couple weeks back! And since Bob didn’t mention the lake I won’t either but I can tell you that it is one of the many mid elevation Kamloops area lakes that holds  fish this size – so pick one and get out there and try your luck cause you definitely won’t catch one sitting on the couch. 😉

Way to go Bob, persistence pays off and to date this year you’re the top ‘flyguy’! Thanks for sharing your story and the picture!

…….Rob

Roche Lake Kamloops Fishing Report Update

April 29, 2010:

Hit Roche again today and thought I’d give a quick update even though the day was almost identical to your report from two days ago but without the chironomid action. I did see some small (and I do mean small) chironomids hatching off but was only able to land one fish using them. The big producer again today (big surprise 🙂 ) was the micro leech under the indicator but I did find that I needed to move it more than usual to elicit strikes.

It took me a while to decide where to fish,  as nothing was really moving when I first arrived, so I tried a few spots that I thought would hold fish. It wasn’t long till I started to see some fish moving and quickly relocated to within casting distance. The move turned out to be a good decison as I was  into two back to back beauty rainbows within a few minutes and they turned out to be my biggest fish of the day! The best part though was seeing that the fish appear to be very healthy, strong and clean – I think they must have had a good winter!

The throat pump samples that I took found empty stomachs in most fish with the odd shrimp, caddis larva and snail showing up from time to time. One fish was stuffed with gammarus shrimp but I had no luck using that tactic. Fortunately, as mentioned above, the micro leech seemed to interest them despite not one leech showing in any of the throat pump samples. Oh well, it was working so I was not about to stop using it just because I didn’t understand why it was working. 😉

The day was quite windy with some sporadic rain but nothing like the storm you and JFM encountered on your last trip to Roche! All in all it was a good day with about a dozen fish landed and a few lost.

Ok that’s my story … sorry but I didn’t get any pictures from today’s trip.

…….Adam

Roche Lake Kamloops Early Spring Fishing Report

not too shaby!

Roche Lake Early Spring Rainbow

April 27, 2010:

Roche lake is located about 40 minutes south of Kamloops on Highway 5A (the old Merritt highway) and was our fishing destination for today. Roche lake sits at about 3800 feet and has been ice free for no more than 10 days. For additional information on Roche and it’s surrounding lakes please see the related posts section at the bottom of this article.

The day started out a bit overcast but it was fairly warm and, best of all, there was no wind. We slowly moved along the water and when we finally found some fish moving we quietly snuck in and anchored amongst them. A quick check on the water didn’t show any hatch activity so on went the old meat and potatoes (AKA the micro leech for me and the bloodworm for JFM) and just like that we were fishing Roche lake for the first time this year! 🙂

The leech did it’s job quickly as it wasn’t long before I had a nice healthy two pounder peeling out line! Despite a gallant effort he soon came to the net where, after a few quick pictures, he was released no worse for wear.

Next up it was JFM’s turn for a bit of excitement as a strong rainbow hammered his bloodworm while he wasn’t paying attention (or should I say paying attention to something else). 😉  No problem, JFM quickly got things under control and brought the feisty bow to the net for another quick photo shoot followed by a quick check of his fly and a cast back out in anticipation of another willing participant. With two fish so fast it was only a matter of time right …..

Well, as usual for this time of the year, just when you think you’ve got things figured out mother nature throws you a curve ball and within a few minutes of our last fish the clouds rolled in, the wind picked up and the hail started flying! I remember thinking that JFM was a bit premature in donning on all of his rain gear when we started fishing but my tune was changing quickly as I watched him sitting nice and dry while I was scrambling to get my rain gear on!

this picture does not do the storm justice!

Roche Lake Storm – (picture does not do it justice!)

The storm lasted about an hour and during that time we were cold and I was wet and we didn’t even get a bite. We were almost ready to leave the lake when the sun made an appearance and started warming things back up. At the same time the hail slowed down and the wind stopped howling and even the fish started rolling again … and as a bonus, we began to see tiny chironomid pupae making their way to the surface!

So off came the leech and off came the bloodworm and on went a couple of the smallest chirony patterns that we had in our fly boxes. And wouldn’t you know it … the fish didn’t seem to care that our imitations were dwarfing the real deal and we enjoyed some decent fishing for a while!

But all good things eventually come to an end and after an hour or so it was like someone flipped the switch and the bite was off. We managed a few more hits by switching back to the micro leeches but they were not really interested and we couldn’t keep any on the hook. But that was alright … we had a fine day and were ready to get back to the truck and warm up. Besides, it won’t be long till were back again! 🙂

Jocko & Edith Lake Kamloops Fishing Report

Nice Fish!

Edith Lake Rainbow – April 26, 2010

April 26, 2010:

Having checked the weather forecast the night before we decided to get on the water early to take advantage of the calm winds predicted for the morning. I’ve come to the conclusion that if I had to do it all again I would be a weatherman … I mean come on … in what other job can you be completely wrong most of the time and still make a decent living!?!

OK sorry bout that … enough ranting … back to the report …

First stop was Jocko lake about a 15 minute drive out of kamloops just off the Lac Le Jeune Highway. After a quick tour of the lake to see what was happening and talk to a few locals to get the latest greatest on what’s been going on we settled into the northern most bay to try our luck. We had noticed some fish moving in the area and were amazed to find that they were in only four feet of water. By the looks of the water and the length of time that the ice has been off the lake we were convinced that Jocko had completed it’s turn and therefore that the water column would be fully oxygenated. We had heard that there was a few chironomids coming off yesterday and were looking forward to fishing chironomid pupae, in  water deeper than four feet, today! Oh well, that’s where the fish seemed to be so that’s where we fished … and with no chironomids showing we went through the usual suspects (ie. leeches, shrimp and damsels) until the wind decided that we were done fishing and convinced us to pack up and go somewhere else! We weren’t the first to leave the lake and everyone we spoke to had the same report … too windy to fish!

Our second stop of the day was Edith lake, also about 15 minutes from Kamloops but off the old Merrit Highway. As we pulled up to the lake we noticed that the wind was howling there as well. We almost pulled the plug and called it a day but at the last second we noticed a small bay that looked to be avoiding the wind storm so we decided to brave the elements and give it a go for a while.  By the time we got the boat in the water and made our way to our chosen spot we had come to the conclusion that Edith was definitely a ways from producing any hatches so we quickly geared up with the micro leeches. No sooner had we dropped the anchors and made a few casts that Adam had on a nice fat three pound rainbow! (see picture at top of post) Soon after we were into another and had missed a few as well … not a bad start but it didn’t last long as almost instantly the wind turned and blew through the bay we were in so hard that our anchors could not hold the boat! Oh well … you can’t win them all and with that we called it a day and slowly made our way back to the truck and then home.

So not so much a fishing report as a weather report but it was nice to see that the water on both Edith and Jocko has cleaned up nicely and given a nice day, or at least a decent day, they both should be fishing well. It was also nice to see that the fish in Edith seemed to have a good winter and looked fat and healthy!

That’s all folks … stay tuned cause we got the week off!

The Triple F  (Fat Furry Foker) was originally designed, hence its name, as a big searching pattern! Kamloops Area Lakes Early Spring Fishing & Ice Off Report

yeah baby!

Travis with a beauty early spring bow!

April 23, 2010:

Well it’s still April but it’s fishing like early May and with the chironomid hatches still warming up the micro leech has been doing a stellar job taking up the slack!

But before we get into the fishing, we are happy to report that all the Roche lake area lakes are now ice off as is Tunkwa, Leighton, Logan, Peterhope, Pass, Edith, Jocko, Heffley, Pinaus, Red and Pinantan! Chironomid hatches are starting to warm up but still seem limited to lakes under 3000 feet.

Roche Lake's Ice Off!

Roche Lake Ice Off! (April 23, 2010)

As for the fishing … well as mentioned, below the 3000 feet mark chironomids are the key, but over that elevation the micro leech under an indicator is still king and we have also had some success using caddis larva patterns fished dead slow just off the bottom. Others that we spoken to on the lakes that we have fished have also reported success with shrimp and damsels.

Nice Bow!

check out the colours on this gorgeous bow!

More specifically, Scuitto lake has been fishing well in the shallows where size 16/18 chironomids are emerging. Lots of fish in the 2 – 3 pound range with the biggest going almost 4 pounds! We don’t have a specific report for Campbell lake but we suspect it would be similar to Scuito lake.

Red lake has slowed down a bit compared to last week with anglers having trouble locating fish and no hatches as of yet. Anglers putting in the effort, however, are still catching a few fish with FAT brookies to about 3 pounds and the odd rainbow to 6 pounds!

NICE!

JFM & Fat April Rainbow!

woo hoo!

UT’s Beauty April Rainbow!

What more can we say … pick a lake and get out there … if chironomids are coming off the water then fish them … if not then strap on a leech … or a shrimp … or a damsel … or any other meat and potato pattern and give it a go!  And when you catch a fish don’t forget to snap a few pictures and send them in along with your story!

Thompson River Kamloops Fishing Report

yeah baby!

Jared and his 8 pound Bull Trout!!!

April 17, 2010:

Took the 10 year old son Jared out fishing last Saturday on the South Thompson river. We had some mixed weather but decided to tough it out and give it our best shot. We started by trying a few different spoons, spinners,  jigs and flatfish from both the shore and boat. The kid was determined and he kept Dad busy!

With the morning almost gone Jared had hooked into 3 small white fish and we were both happy with the day so far. Then, at about 11AM, Jared hooked into a nice fish and after a good battle he lands this 8 pound Bull trout!!!

Good job son you out fished your dad once again. ha ha 🙂

Paul Lake April 21 2010

Paul Lake - April 2010

 April 21, 2010:

Fished Paul lake today and yesterday and had some not bad fly fishing till about 10:30 AM when the wind came up creating white caps on the water! Surface temperature today was 43 – 44 F.
.
Over the 2 days we were once again succesfull with big leeches in both brown and green.  Al had his best results fishing a black leech under a strike indicator. In total we were into over 25 fish with the biggest about 18 inches long –  not too shaby considering the weather.

Morgan Lake Kamloops Fishing Report

Morgan Lake April 2010

Morgan Lake - April 2010

April 20, 2010:

Had a bit of time to kill today so I took a quick trip to Morgan lake. For those that don’t know Morgan lake is about 20 minutes west of Kamloops on highway 1 west. At just over 1800 feet it’s a fairly low elevation lake and this year has already been ice free for about 2 months!

Today was alright but nothing spectacular. I ended up bringing in 9 and lost a bunch.  Very nice fish but they sure didn’t put up a good fight … perhaps they’re tired from all the catch & release over the last 2 months! The average size was about 2  1/2 pounds.

Anyways, overall it was a good day with lots of small chironomids hatching. I caught all my fish on the smallest green chironomid I had – about a size 16 I’d say.  I was by myself in my boat so I just got one shot of the rod with a fish on.

Roche Lake Kamloops Area Ice Off Report

April 18, 2010:

With the weather so nice I decided to take what has lately become my weekly trip up to check out a few of the awesome Kamloops area fly fishing lakes around Roche lake. As last week I made a big loop cruising by Roche, Frisken, Bulman, Ernest, Bog, Black, Rose, Tulip, Horseshoe, John Frank, Campbell, Scuitto and Bleeker lakes! Unlike last week, however, the warm weather has paid off because they weren’t all covered with ice! 🙂

OK here’s the good news:  Campbell, Scuitto, Bleeker and Tom Campbell lakes are all ice free! The rest of the lakes are not far behind with wide open shores and the ice that remains is soft and rotting! My prediction is that as long as the weather holds all of the lakes in the area will be full ice off by the end of this weekend!

Talked to some guys at Bleeker and they said they were having some success with olive micro leeches under an indicator. Hey Rob I think it’s about time for an article on fishing leeches this way eh 😉

For a visual on the lakes in this report check out our previous Roche lake area map post! You can also check out the ice & thaw status of many other great Kamloops area fly fishing lakes on our web cams page!

Sorry but I didn’t get any pictures this trip.

Low Elevation Kamloops Area Lake Fishing Report

Nice one!

Keyvan & Nice Rainbow!

Sunday April 18, 2010:

Sunny & clear with a bit of wind on this low elevation (approx 1800 feet) Kamloops area lake. The water temperature was 53 F and the lake appeared to be in turn over.

There were lots of chironomids hatching but we fished a green leech and it produced with 4 fish landed, 4 fish released, and 2 fish lost. Throat pump revealed that they were eating mayflys – yes that’s right, April 19 and they were full of mayflys!

Picture is of our biggest fish.

Paul Lake Kamloops Area Fishing Report

See … we told you it was only gunna get better!

Fat April Rainbow

Holy Fatso Batman! (Nice Fish Too!)

It was overcast, rainy and windy but that didn’t stop the chironomid pupae  from making their way to the surface! I guess nobody told them that the weather wasn’t going to be the greatest today so the tiny (size 16 – 18) little limey’s did what they do best and started popping off the 42 degree water surface at about 10 AM and didn’t stop till about 3 PM! Not wanting to miss the feast the bows weren’t far behind the pupae and therefore were easy (ok easier – it’s never really easy) to find making for an interesting day of fishing!

Over the last few days we have seen chironomids hatching off at every lake we’ve fished up to about the 2500 foot elevation mark. These hatches will continue and grow stronger around this level for approximatley the next month and this means the fishing will also get better at lakes in that range!

To ensure that you’re choosing lakes in this currently productive zone, and therefore optimizing your chances to hit a chironomid hatch,  be sure to check out and utilize our BC lakes on Google Earth page. This page contains the the Google earth link that provides elevation (and much more relevant fishing information) for every lake in BC! It is an invaluable tool and is highly recommended by flyguys.net!

One more day off and it’s supposed to be sunny so we’ll most likely have another Kamloops area fishing report tomorrow! Stay tuned folks …….

Yet Another Kamloops Area Lakes Fishing Report

Fat Fraser Valley Rainbow on a Leech

Fat Fraser Valley Rainbow on a Leech

This report starts at this very pretty 2000 ish foot elevation little gem where the fish were keying in on the tiny pale green chironomid pupae that were hatching off in the low 40 degree water column. And when you couldn’t hook them on chironomids you could catch them in the shallows with a micro leech! Although we didn’t get into any monsters, the fishing was steady and the fish were feisty and appeared to be in great shape! We could have chosen a worse way to spend a gorgeous Friday and it was nice to see that the chironomids have started hatching at this level!

Yummy!

A Feast of Bows!

And while we were busy there, JFM put a 2500 ish foot elevation Kamloops area lake to the test and caught a few nice ones fishing BIG brown marabou leeches down deep! Nice work JFM! The water temperature here was also in the low 40’s, the water was murky and there were some small black and green chironomids coming off but fishing the deep leech was more productive. The action was fairly steady with about 15 fish being caught within a few hours. Again, it was nice to see that chironomids have started hatching at this elevation!

Word is that salmon Arm’s White lake has been fishing fast and furious all week long on chironomid pupae with fish to 3 pounds! At around 1500 feet in elevation it’s about time!!! The majority of the action has been focused but not limited to the North side of the lake. Yesterday, however, the water muddied up a bit and the fishing slowed down. Not sure if it has anything to do with turn over, as at that elevation one would think it would be complete by now, but something is effecting the water and the fishing. Stay tuned as we have a source on the water and we’ll let you know as soon as we hear that things are back on track!

Finally Jocko lake, at 2900 ish feet elevation, is taking it’s sweet time completing its turn over and therefore the fishing has remained spotty. Even though not much is hatching yet, fish are being caught on size 16 – 12 chironomid pupae in black, brown and green as well as micro leeches in black and red. We have also heard of some success on caddis larvae in pale yellow and brown. For reference, see  our 2010 Gallery page and check out the pictures of the caddis larvae that we pumped from a BC interior lake fish last week.

It’s really starting to heat up now so get out, catch some fish and drop us a line with your stories and pictures!

Back to Deep Lake Kamloops

Deep Lake - Kamloops

Deep Lake – April 2010

Went to deep again today and it was even better this time (more action) but same size fish.  There was a big chironomid hatch today which was lots of fun!  You could just cast out your chironomid and the fish would hook themselves!  Throat pump showed a belly full of green chironomid larvae! You can check out all the pictures on our 2010 Gallery Page!

Deep Lake Kamloops Fishing Report

……. Who says you can’t fly fish from shore???

Well, being such a beautiful day out today, I decided to go for a hike up to Deep Lake and do some fishing.

Deep lake is located in the Lac du Bois Grasslands. It’s a small but deep walk in only lake about a 20 minute hike up from Westsyde road. Deep lake offers some good shore fishing for both Rainbow and Brook trout to about 2 pounds – although I have been surprised with the occasional “lunker”!

I ended up landing lots of fish. I was fishing with a leech under an indicator from shore. Looks like the big ones are not in there anymore … perhaps dead from winter kill last year … a lot of small, but super fat bows though that are gonna be some nice fish next year and the year after!

Sorry no pics … Adam

Roche Lake Area Kamloops Ice Off Report

Well it was a nice day so I loaded up the quad to check out a few Kamloops area lakes around Roche lake. Did a big loop cruising by Frisken, Bulman, Ernest, Bog, Black, Rose, Tulip, Horseshoe, John Frank, Campbell, Scuitto and Bleeker lakes! All that I can say is that the latest cold weather hasn’t helped anything as all the lakes I checked out were still pretty much full ice on but starting to get soft around the edges.  Here’s a few pictures:

Another Kamloops Area Lake Report

Kamloops Area Lake Fly Fishing at it's Best!

Today’s Kamloops area lake found us at about 3000 feet where, like yesterday, there was nothing hatching, the water temprature was just under 40 degrees and the air temperature felt about the same! Unlike yesterday, however, today was sunny, the wind was fairly calm and the fish were FAT!

With the lack of emerging bugs evident we turned once again to the meat and potatoes section of our fly boxes and were almost immediately rewarded with our first fatso of the day.  It looks like leeches, shrimp & chironomid larva (bloodworms) are going to be the norm at this elevation for a while yet – at least until the water warms to a more “hatch compliant” level.

Kamloops Area Lake Fishing Report

a nice 'ice just off' bow!

Another cold wet day but this time with a bit more ‘to the boat’ action than our last trip!

This particular Kamloops area lake sits at about 2900 feet and has been ice off for almost 3 weeks.  Within these parameters we were fully expecting to see some chironomid action but, although we did catch a few fish on  chironomid pupa patterns, there was no hatch present. Our guess is that the cold weather (water temperature was just under 40 degrees) kept any potential hatches at bay.

The action continued to be spotty despite flogging the water with the usual suspects for this time of year (read leech and shrimp patterns) but we were determined to figure it out … that is until mother nature decided to let us know it was time to head for shore as the sky clouded over, the wind began to howl and the snow started to fly!

Right before heading out we decided to use the throat pump on one of our victims and were very surprised with what we found:

Yes those are Caddis Larvae! “Cased” Caddis Larvae to be exact! The Caddis Larva is present all year long, and therefore always available to fish but unfortunately we had not considered them as our first (or even second) choice for this time of year.  Too late now though! No matter, it was fun while it lasted and we’ll spend the rest of the day at the bench tying up some patterns to match our days findings so we’ll be ready when the opportunity arises again!

That’s all folks …….

Edith Lake – Take 2

Fly Fishing a snowy Edith Lake, Kamloops BC

Well it was cold and it was wet but we just had to get out so …. off we went to fish the ‘almost’ ice off Edith lake! And although we did finally manage to key in on what they were taking (and therefore were the recipients of many hits) we certainly missed more than we hooked up on! All in all however it was a great way to spend the afternoon and we can’t wait till next weekend when it’s bound to be even better!

Edith Lake Report

Well it was a lazy Easter Sunday so I decided to take a drive and check out the status of Edith Lake. Edith is famous for it’s large rainbow’s and brookies AND it’s close to home so needless to say I was anxious to see if it was ready to fish. When I arrived this is what I saw:

Edith Lake close to ice off on Easter Sunday

Yup that’s water! The ice that is left is contained to the middle of the lake and my guess would be that she’ll be wide open within a few days! You might not be able to see it in the picture but there is a boat on the far bank as well as a couple guys fishing from shore.

In the past I have had luck at Edith at ice off with micro leeches in olive and black/red as well as chironomids and blood worms. If you’re trolling,  a wee dick nite on a medium sink line in the shallows has also proven well for me in the past. If you go, good luck and please post a report.

PS: A quick check using my BC Lakes on Google Earth link shows that Edith is at 3370 ft. Hmm, I notice that Red Lake is at 3115 ft. I Wonder where I should go tomorrow? 😉

BC Lake Information on Google Earth!

Sorry this app is no longer supported. Please visit our BC Interior Stillwater Resource pages here.

This application combines the best of Google Earth with information compiled and provided by Go Fish BC. The result is a tool that displays a wealth of relevant lake & fishing information right in Google Earth! Not only will you see name labels for almost every lake in the province, but you can also open a menu on each lake showing all sorts of lake information including stocking charts! This is an incredibly useful tool for fishermen and comes highly recommended by flyguys.net!

The application requires that you have Google Earth installed on your computer. If you don’t you can get it here.

Once Google earth is installed, simply click our BC Lakes on Google Earth link and then select ‘open’. The application will automatically open and load into Google Earth! For your convenience, this link is also provided under ‘Fishing Resources’ in the left menu bar of every flyguys.net web page.

Kamloops Area Lakes Fishing Report

OK according to my sources …….

Jocko Lake is ice off and has been fishing well on chironomid pupa, bloodworms & micro leeches. Try to get in on the action as soon as you can as we can expect about a 10 day slow down with turn over coming soon.

Morgan & Six Mile Lakes had slowed down since ice off but have recently picked up again. The usual  chironomid pupa, bloodworms & micro leeches are the ticket there as well. Although the action is good at both the bigger fish seem to be coming out of Six Mile.

Paul Lake is 14 days ice free today and the word is tiny lime green chironomid pupa are starting to come off. When in doubt leeches & shrimp are also a good bet there this time of year.

Other than that we can also confirm that White Lake & Barnes lake are also ice free. Oh … and of course you could also do some spin casting from shore for fish to 6 pounds on good old Kamloops Lake!

That’s all for now folks …….

Back to Kamloops Lake

Well we had so much fun last time that we had to go back and try it again! Not even the rain and the snow that fell over night (and continued into the morning) could hold us back!

On arival at the lake it was cold, windy and the fishing was slow … although I did manage to catch a nice silver bullet on only my second cast! As the day progressed, however, the sun made an appearance, the wind calmed and the fishing picked up. The action was far from fast and furious, as it was last week, but all the fish were clean and strong. By the time we were done we had landed about a dozen spunky bows with the biggest at about 3 1/2 pounds.

Pictures of todays adventure can be viewed on the gallery page!

Things that make you go hmm…

With a little time on our hands last weekend we decided to take a hike out to Kamloops Lake in hopes of casting chronies to hungry rainbows. The wind, however, had other plans for us! Thinking as much we had come prepared with spinning rods and a few spoons. Well … what a pleasant surprise to find that it would be just the ticket to an action packed afternoon with plenty of action and fish to 6 pounds! If you’re waiting for your favourite lake to thaw and don’t want to battle the crowds at the few that are already open, consider a trip to Kamloops Lake!

You can check out more pictures of our trip on the gallery page!
