Flyguys North Kamloops Fishing Adventure 2014

BC Rainbow Trout

I got the email early April that a date had been selected for the GOEG IV and it was May 30 + 31. The GOEG (Gathering Of Extraordinary Gentlemen) is a get together, for as many as can make it, of all the yahoos I grew up and went to school with. Located on the shores of Okanagan Lake, at a buddies cabin, it’s a weekend of eating large, drinking hard and stories around the fire. First thing that popped into my head was that I have to parlay this into a pre-event fishing trip like Steve and I did two years ago … flyguys Northern Division Kamloops Fishing Adventure 2014! The wife on being informed of all this piped up, ”Good Maggie (dog) and I will come with you and you can drop us off at my mom’s place,” I replied that I didn’t think there would be enough room and I was only half joking. By the time I load the Yeti and all my fishing/camping gear there’s not much room. But yes, you guessed it, I made room, for I’m not a complete idiot!

Sheridan Deep Water Chironomids …

So what to do in June for Chironomid fishing?

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

My May was not filled with chronie fishing anywhere near as much as I would have liked so Rob and I had to make a plan. We hit a couple local lakes and each time we drove we discussed a trip somewhere. The ideas would fly and after whittling it down to just a few Rob left it to me to make the final decision. My previous experiences at Sheridan are limited to waiting most of the day for just one or two fish with the chance that one of those may be a pig, but with the chronie season winding down around the Loops area lakes that prospect didn’t sound so bad … so Sheridan deep water chironomids it was!

Rock Bottom Stonefly Nymph Fly Pattern

Rock Bottom Stonefly Nymph Fly Pattern

In our effort to leave no stone unturned, I bring you the Rock Bottom Stonefly nymph …

Although not common, every now and then I see giant stone flies fluttering around in the late spring early summer up this way. This is my version to represent them. Stone flies are important when they’re coming off but the nymphs are also on the menu in the spring before any major hatches get going. Tie lots because you’re going to leave some on the stream/river bottom if you’re fishing  them properly!

Now before you run off to find a skillet or wok this is not one of those delicious recipes that you will find on this site. No this is a recipe for a fry fly (smolt fly) and I dare you to find a simpler one. All that’s required is two hackles, a hook, some thread and a fish skull.

Olive Shuttlecock Emerger Fly

Olive Shuttlecock Emerger Fly Pattern
Mayfly | Chironomid | Caddis

Groundhog day doesn’t hold much weight up here in the North East corner of B.C. We really don’t care if some Eastern, flea ridden, rodent comes out of its den, dressed in a smoking jacket and does a jig.

Nothing will change the fact that, no matter what, we will have at least another six weeks of winter! No for us much more scrutiny is given to the old saying about March. “ In like a lion out like a lamb” or “ In like a lamb and out like a lion.” The old timers seemed to hit that one on the head. So it was that I awoke this morning (March 1) to see minus 32 degrees with a wind chill of 40 below. ROAR. It actually put a smile on my face and to celebrate I decided to head downstairs and tie up a batch of the Olive  Shuttlecock Emerger Fly …

Best Skunked Day Ever!

… BC fishing, it’s not always about the fish! 😉

... a gorgeous fishing day in beautiful Brtish Columbia!

Well the end of 2013 fishing kind of fizzled out for me. No fishing in November or December! I know some of you are thinking,” Ya no big deal,” but for me that’s the first time that’s happened in about 35 years. I love winter fishing whether it’s hard water or out on the Peace River , which never freezes up near the dams. Continue reading

Zebra Chironomid Pupa Fly Pattern (AKA Black & Thread)

Zebra Chironomid Pupa Fly Pattern …

Every year about this time I get to thinking about, anticipating, the upcoming open water season. This year was no different.  I forget where I was or what I was supposed to be paying attention to at the time, but I do remember that the particular reminiscing session I was having took me back to early ice off chronie fishing at Stump lake. It was a couple years ago and, although we were doing OK,  our friend Ron (Kamloops Fly Shop) and his buddy were anchored not far from us kicking our butts! When I finally got a chance to speak with Ron about what he was using that day he showed me a very simple black & white(ish) ribbed chronie with a black bead and no gill. From it’s appearance I immediately dubbed it the Zebra Chironomid Pupa.

Bipolar Balanced Leech Fly Pattern ..

Ahhhh night shifts! 3:30 AM and all kinds of crazy shite is going through my head.

Fly Fishing Bomber Chironomids

As stillwater flyfishers we know that the late summer heat of August has forced the trout to murky depths and made them too lethargic to chase any offering we present. It is at this time that we pursue other recreational interests while we wait for water temperatures to cool down in mid September and bring on the fall fishing season. However there is an exception to the rule … fly fishing bomber chironomids! Continue reading

The Last Boatman Standing

... fly fishing water boatman spring & fall!

Well last time out in my tube, post ice off, did the trick in releasing the winter doldrums. It just felt good to be into some fish. Last weekend the plan was to take the “River Wolf” and drop it into a lake that had bigger fish. The thought of standing up on my bow, using it as a casting platform, and targeting cruising fish in the shallows had me wired for sound. The weather had been crappy all week with the last two days under a heavy rainfall warning.
That was going to change on Friday and with the barometer rising fishing could be stellar!

Finally Ice Off in FSJ!

... fly fished Rainbow trout!

April is a cruel month in the North. I remember growing up in the North Okanagan and April was all about green grass, leaves sprouting, flowers starting to bloom and warm rains. Now April for me is below zero overnight temps, the odd blizzard and dirty sand and gravel covered snow piles on the edges of the roads. Oh yea the other big downer… ice covered lakes. 🙁  You can only read and hear about so many ice off adventures down south before you snap. Tying helps, sort of, but when the shack nasties get out of control I’ve found a remedy that works for me. Mexico! 😀 Baking in the sun thawing the marrow of my bones and floating in the warm Caribbean works wonders. I came home to snow gone and reports of lakes starting to break-up. So I went fishing … and here’s the first Northern BC Fly Fishing Report of 2013!

Clear Goo Caddis Pupa | Sedge Fly Pattern

... clear goo caddis pupa fly pattern!ddis pupa fly pattern!I’d recently seen an article about Clear Goo and its uses so I ordered in the light kit with thick, thin and Hydros Goo. My intention was to use it to tie minnow patterns but once I had the stuff at the tying bench I started messing around with it on bait fish and other fly patterns. I started to think of what bugs in life have a translucent or transparent body and the first image that popped into my head was the big Traveler Sedge pupa so famous in British Columbia. Hmm, a translucent clear goo caddis pupa … now this could get interesting! 😉

Stump Lake Damsel 2.0

Stump Lake Damsel Damselfly Nymph Fly Pattern

Stump Lake Damsel Damselfly Nymph Fly Pattern

Stump Lake Damsel Damselfly Nymph Fly ..

I remember my first really successful day fly fishing Stump lake. It was years ago, the month was June and the damsels were hatching!

We were anchored in the shallows tossing out big yellowish green nymphs and trying to imitate their wiggly progression towards the shoreline. For every damsel that made it out of the water to hatch there were many that didn’t as the trout knew exactly what was going on and flooded the area to intercept them on route. It was kind of humorous, the bows were ambushing the damsels and we were trying to ambush the bows … and when we worked it just right the action was fast and furious!

FGN’s Combo Nymph River Fly Pattern

... FGN's Combo Nymph River Fly Pattern

FGN’s Combo Nymph River Fly Pattern

Combo Nymph River Fly Pattern …

Here’s a dandy little combo nymph river fly pattern. Designed for flowing water, the combo nymph has some weight to it, some flash to it,  and it kind of resembles a bunch of different trout food found in streams and rivers. This version of the combo nymph river fly pattern in black and green I think can represent little black caddis ( nymph and diving females), beetles, stoneflies and possibly big carpenter ants.

Anytime you can cover more than one base your hook up rate should increase! Wishful thinking? Who knows but this is a good river fly pattern to go to when there is no apparent hatch. The basic design of the combo nymph allows for tons of different colours and materials so don’t be afraid to mix and match with what you have kicking around the bench. Let’s get tying!

FGN’s Galloup Style Streamer Fly Pattern

Well the holiday season is now over and, in my case, the depths of winter have descended with a heavy thump.

We had a brief reprieve of the cold for a few days but are now back down in the 20 to 30 below range with wind chills that will freeze exposed skin within  minutes. Or as we like to say “tough fishing weather”! With four months until our lakes become ice free it’s time … lots of time, for some fly tying.

What I’m going to show you today is what I call a project fly as it takes a good chunk of an evening to round up the material and crank out a half dozen. This is a Kelly Galloup inspired, articulated streamer fly pattern designed for big meat eating fish.

Ice Fishing Safety Tips & Equipment

Ice Fishing Safety Tips & Equipment …

Ice fishing the lakes of the beautiful British Columbia Interior is very popular and a lot of fun! The ice usually appears on our lakes in mid to late fall and can remain well into the spring. Each winter thousands of anglers venture out onto frozen lakes to fish through the ice and, unfortunately, each winter there are ice related accidents. As much as we love to fish, ice over cold lake water can pose some serious, life threatening dangers. Please keep the following tips in mind when playing near or on the ice …….

MOBY Kamloops Series Fly Fishing Nets
MOBY Kamloops Trophy

I’ve been doing this fly fishing thing for quite some time, and have used almost every type of landing net out there, but it wasn’t until the spring of 2011 that I got my first taste of a MOBY! I had hooked in to a double digit bow and was struggling to land it with my conventional round hoop net. Thankfully a buddy,  noticing my frustration, rowed over to lend me his MOBY. I couldn’t believe the difference it made in landing, resting, and safely releasing that magnificent creature! The next time I hit the water, and ever since, there’s been a MOBY fly fishing net by my side!

Susan’s Stuffed & BBQ Venison Tenderloin Recipe

Stuffed Venison Tenderloin Recipe

Venison Tenderloin is a premium cut of game meat that can be used in many of the same ways as beef, lamb or pork tenderloin. Venison however has a unique flavour that lends itself well to being marinated, smoked, roasted or grilled. Many venison recipes suggest wrapping tenderloin medallions in bacon or prosciutto but Susan takes a bit of a twist with this one by adding flavour from the inside out … and man does it work!

How To Fillet Halibut

yummy!

krazy’s little “chicken” halibut

As you may have seen on our 2011 fishing reports post or the flyguys.net facebook page, this year we took a bit of time out of July to hit Prince Rupert for some fishing on the Pacific Ocean! What a blast! We were into Pink, Coho & Chinook (Spring) salmon, Rock Cod, Crabs and Halibut! Now we have had some experience with salmon and the like but the halibut fishing was brand new to us and therefore so was how to deal with them in preparation for the oven or freezer. A quick lesson by a local expert soon cleared that up and were soon perfecting the technique ourselves! For those that are in the same boat as we were, here’s how to fillet a halibut!

*** Warning: fish innards & some blood – not suitable for non outdoorish types 😉

Summer Bows Bulls & Gray’s

... northern bow on the fly!

Well my last day of work before holidays actually ended up being an H2S course in town. I finished up early and that meant time to grab the boat and head out on the Peace for one last fish before heading south. As I was heading up river I saw a seam close to shore with fish rising all along it. I beached the boat and had a close look at what they might be going after. Little black caddis was the answer so on went a size 12 black elk hair caddis. These weren’t sipping rises but splashy hits and I was sure I was going to be into fish right away! So with that … here’s a late summer BC fishing report for ya! 🙂

Trying to get organized and out on the water was like pulling teeth …. wait I didn’t get out as I was having teeth pulled! I knew there were teeth involved somewhere in this story. 🙂

This weekend was going to be different. I had a minor repair to do on the jeep Thursday after work and the plan was to take the boat to the Peace early Friday morning. It was a good plan, almost fool proof, but things went sideways soon as I popped the hood on the jeep. I shut her down around 9:00 PM and went in for a beer totally aware that there would be no fishing in the morning and, depending on what happened tomorrow, no evening fish either. This on top of the fact the spills had resumed and the river was rippin’ again. As I was moping around on the deck I got a call from my son Timbre who patiently listen to my jeep story. He then said what are you doing Saturday? He said they were ahead on an engine rebuild and if all went well Friday bringing it back online, he would have Saturday off. He may have said what are you doing? but what I heard loud and clear was let’s take the boat out. That perked me up a bit and I said give me a call Friday when you get home and if it’s a go we’ll take your truck. I’m happy to report that I fixed the jeep, Timbre had Sat off, and we geared to head out early Sat. morning!

The One That “NEVER” Got Away!

... BIG brookie!

My One Island Lake Brook Trout!

Summer, yes it’s finally here! You know what that means for a fly fisher, right? Well I’ll explain it, the spot that you want to catch fish in, is always gunna be over fished, especially if its one island lake! Nothing bugs me more than going out onto a lake, and it being full of spinning fisherman! That ounce of hope you had, before coming off of shore, that today maybe I’m actually going to catch the big one. Ya that feeling, and train of thought went out the window about a minute ago. Spoons, giant red devils, ripping, and slicing through the water in any place you thought would be acceptable to fish. Yes and now to boot, you start noticing these bobbing things on the water, which start coming to life, and an engine roar. Now there is more boats coming onto the lake, you soon have your soul diminish. Then, when you are least expecting it, your rod slowly begins to slip out of your hand, and your line goes tight! Fish on!

In the End!

... wow, what a fish!

Renee with Her Nine lb. BC Interior Bow!

I’ve recently moved to Kamloops and have enjoyed getting back into trout fishing again and putting the salmon gear to rest. I couldn’t help but buy an Ice Hut and get out on the local lakes to see what this region is all about. With much luck ( asking local guys for advice ) I had an incredible season mostly spent on Red Lake and can’t wait to do it all over again … but that’s another story. For now here’s the story of a day we won’t soon forget!

FGN Southern Raid 2012

... nice bow!

Over the winter Steve, my buddy Don and I discussed where and when to do a spring fish in the Southern Interior. We ended up with the last week of May ( this was the easy part) and somewhere around Kamloops. Both the boys had suggested that we  should get a place at Roche Lake and use it as a base camp. So when I asked the question to the “Home Office” all Rob said was ” Do it.” So we did and are we ever glad!

Alpha Baetis Mayfly Nymph Fly

Alpha Baetis Mayfly Nymph Fly

Alpha Baetis Mayfly Nymph Fly Fishing Pattern.

Alpha Baetis Mayfly Nymph Fly Pattern ..

About four years ago we found ourselves in the middle of a huge mayfly hatch on world famous Sheridan lake.

Sheridan is one of the BC Interiors most challenging yet rewarding lakes … and by rewarding I mean that if you catch enough fish you stand a very good chance of netting a few in the double digits! 😯 It stands to reason on a lake like this that when the hatch is on you don’t want to have to stop fishing for any reason. We were doing OK but the problem was that the fish were destroying our flies, which at the time were mostly Pheasant Tail and Hare’s Ear Nymphs.

That evening we hit the bench to see what we could do. We stuck with pheasant tail as a perfect imitator of the mayfly’s gilled body, and with the hare’s ear’s dubbing concept for the thorax,  but subbed in alternate materials for the fragile areas of both traditional flies – specifically the tails and wing cases. The result was the “Alpha Baetis Mayfly Nymph Fly” and it proved its self the very next day. It continues to be one of our go to bugs when ever the Callibaetis genera nymphs have the bow’s attention.

… read on to learn how to tie the Alpha Baetis!
