March came in like a Lion and is going out like a Snow Leopard! Still four feet in my front yard and the piles alongside my driveway are pushing eight feet! I’m thinking a late spring with flooding.

The weekend itinerary was to shovel driveway, grab a beer and head on down to the tying bench. Plan is to try to head south mid-week so I thought I’d quickly throw up this tie of the Superintendent Sam Steele Blue Leech Fly Pattern just in case I get trapped in the Pine Pass. 😉 Continue reading

Black Spot Disease Red Lake Water Fleas

Black Spot Disease
Harmless Red Lake Water Fleas

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

I have heard a lot of talk over the past couple of years regarding the “water fleas” that seem to be on an increasing number of fish in Red Lake BC (Region 3). I personally have not come across this parasite in any other BC lakes, but it would only make sense that it would not be specific to just Red Lake. I will definitely be keeping a sharper eye out when on my fishing travels throughout this great area of BC just to satisfy my curiosity.

The “water flea” issue caught my ear because I have noticed these small black “poppy seed” type bumps on a larger percentage of the the brook trout I’ve been catching at that lake. Continue reading

Chironomid Pupa Fly Tying Tips

Chironomid Pupa Fly Tying Tips
– Building a Better Chironomid Fly –

Reflecting back on the highlights of our recently completed  2018 Introduction to Chironomid Fly Fishing seminar, I noted participant interest in the chironmid pupa fly tying tips section of the course. Brandyn must of caught it as well because before I even mentioned it to him he had already pumped out three videos focused on tips & tricks for tying the cone, gilled and buzzer style chironomid pupae flies. It was settled then, and with spring and ice off on the horizon the timing couldn’t be better for a chironomid pupa fly tying tips article. 😉 Continue reading

If you’re reading this article, you may be shaking your head in disgust of the fact that these atrocities have made their way into Canadian waters, be very intrigued as to what these goofy looking flies are all about, or have already had a chance to fish them and realize how incredibly effective they can be. Here’s a bit of booby fly history and, for those that choose to use them, some “how to fish em” intel that is sure to flatten the learning curve. 😉 Continue reading

Friday 13
A Northern BC Fall Fishing Report

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

I was required to work one day this weekend, on ERT (Emergency Response Team) coverage, and was given a choice on which day it would be. I told them I’d have my answer in a couple of minutes … and off I went to the computer to bring up ‘The Weather Channel’. I was really hoping to get the boat out a couple more times this year before putting it to bed for the winter, and realistically that meant only two, possibly three, more weekends. So the two choices were Friday with highs of 1C, 12 KM winds gusting to 18 KM, and snow flurries OR Saturday with highs around 9C and 35 KM winds gusting to 44 KM! Cold I can dress for but the wind is out of my control so it was a no brainier …  I’ll take my chances with Friday the 13! 🙂 Continue reading

The drive south for summer holidays is usually an exciting time filled with anticipation of some good ol’ R&R. But this year there was a cloud hanging over us as we drove down through a province on fire. That cloud was smoke. Other than a day or two we’ve had a smoke free summer here on the other side of the Rockies. You could see it’ll leave a black scar that’ll be there the rest of my life but it’s all part of the cycle that’s been going on in the Boreal forest forever. Continue reading

I’ve been accused of being OCD but we won’t go there today! This is just another Darner Dragon pattern to add to the arsenal but I got to tell you that it’s Beta testing went really well! The original version of the OCD was tied with UV Chewy Skin (hence the name) but I found it too thick for my liking. This final version of the OCD is more buoyant with the foam/deer hair body and works well on an intermediate sink line. 😉

Screaming Viking | Green Red Butt Chironomid Pupa Fly

Screaming Viking Green Red Butt Chironomid Pupa Fly Pattern

The Screaming Viking
Green Red Butt Chironomid Pupa Fly

Like it’s predecessor, the Bleeding Limey, the Screaming Viking (Green Red Butt Chironomid Pupa Fly) was borne out of necessity. The original was needed so that those little green red butt cronies would never get the best of us again! And truth be told it did, and continues to do, a great job in that respect! The problem, if you can really call it that, is that the acetate floss material used in its construction makes it a bit tough to keep smaller patterns slim and in proportion to the naturals that we want to imitate. Is it doable? Yes absolutely! It just takes enough more time and effort that it got me thinking if I could accomplish the same thing in a different way. Enter the Screaming Viking …

Well, what I did was spend WAY too much time surfing Amazon for useful fly fishing products that I might be interested in. Fly Fishing Cutthroat Trout

The icy winds of November and December mean an end to the stillwater fly fishing season in most of our province, but in here in the Fraser Valley they signal the beginning of one of my favorite times of year.  While many anglers target winter Steelhead on popular systems like the Chilliwack or Chehalis, I like to explore forgotten Fraser Valley sloughs and secluded backwaters in search of the elusive Coastal Cutthroat.

The Tunkwa lake provincial park is a mixture of protected mid elevation grasslands, forests, lakes, and wetlands offering year-round fishing and outdoor wilderness recreation opportunities for locals and tourists alike. Tunkwa & Leighton are in such close proximity (actually they are side by each with Tunkwa lake flowing into Leighton lake through a spillway) that it would be impossible to distinguish the fishing characteristic of one from the other. The only real difference is that Leighton Lake is a bit deeper and more sheltered from the wind and therefore may be a bit easier to navigate in a small boat or float tube/pontoon. May Chironomids 2016 – Fly Fishing Beautiful British Columbia

[embedit snippet=”gas-auto-responsive-link-ad-minimalist”]

May Chironomids 2016 …….

“Go north young man, go north.” It’s been over 38 years since I heeded those words and I have to tell you I’m glad I did. There is a lot of territory farther north that still calls me but lately I’ve been hearing a faint echo every now and then “ Go south old fart, go south.” So periodically I must subdue the voices and head back to the home stomping grounds. Back to my natal valleys, back to my home waters, back to Rob’s driveway and May chironomids. I fully expect one of these times a request to sign a timeshare for in front of his house! I think the jeep spent more time there than anywhere else in Kamloops that week. Continue reading

Green Grass Cased Caddis Fly Pattern …

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

In all honesty, caddis nymphs are rarely my first choice when choosing flies.  I was raised fishing Kamloops’ stillwaters, where I focused my fishing efforts on chironomid, leech, dragonfly nymph, and dry fly techniques. It wasn’t until I moved from the Kamloops area, and began fishing more swiftwaters, that I started to fully appreciate the utility of knowing how, and when to fish caddis nymphs.   Imitating a cased caddis always seemed like a silly idea to me. I had never spotted a cased caddis in a throat pump and figured their case must be an excellent deterrent to foraging trout.

Pre-chironimid Season: Early Spring Fly Fishing Strategies

Early Spring Fly Fishing Strategies …

In the pacific northwest, particularly in the interior of BC and Washington, spring stillwater fly-angling is often referred to as “chironomid season”.  With an abundance of lakes where spring emergences are dominated by little dipterans of the taxonomic family Chironomidae (and to a lesser extent Chaoboridae), the colloquial term “chironomid season” is fitting. Zucchini Chironomid Fly Pattern …

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

Over the last few years the Zucchini Chironomid Fly has become one of our most popular and most requested chronie fly patterns. And justifiably so. It is typically the first fly tied on once the spring chronies start hatching and it rarely needs to be swapped out! I was recently asked if we invented the Zucchini. Well, although I can honestly say that at the time of its inception we had not heard of anyone else using this particular material combination, it seems unlikely that we would have been the first to put it together. The name however, and arguably a good portion of its recent popularity, can certainly be attributed to flyguys.net. But all of that is really irrelevant. What matters is that this extremely simple, highly versatile chironomid pupa imitation is extraordinarily effective at enticing trout to strike. If we had to choose only one chrony pattern to fish with, the Zucchini Chironomid Fly might just be it!

What seems like only a few years ago, Coach was asking about my Simple Smoked Trout Recipe. Then, in typical Coach fashion, he tweaked and twisted things until ultimately arriving at more flavorful brine mixture, with a significantly lower salt content, perfectly suited for smoked Brook Trout. Still simple, and similar enough to the original that I questioned the value of a separate post, but after devouring a fresh batch last night it became clear that this Smoked Brook Trout Recipe, complete with Coach’s dry Brookie Brine, was just too good too not share!

Togen Fly Reel Review (Model ZSRA 5/7 Gun Metal Gray shown above)

[embedit snippet=”gas-auto-responsive-link-ad-minimalist”]

One of the great things about living in the Southern Interior of BC is the multitude of fly fishing opportunities available. Of course, when opportunities abound, so does the gear. But in a market with a lot of gear, how does the consumer find the products with great value?? Well, really, it’s all word of mouth. With most companies spending big money on advertising and marketing, word of mouth is the only real objective information you’ll receive on a product. That’s where gear reviews come in handy. I’m just one guy with one opinion, but I think it’s helpful to both consumers and retailers, since the best way to unveil strengths and weaknesses is let the anglers (and the fish) have their way with the product for a while. So on that note, I’d really like to thank Togens Fly Shop for giving us the chance to throw these reels around. They played an integral role in us being hated by quite a few fish. The reels look good, work well, and feel nice as part of the rod. Continue reading

2015 Fishing Spring BC Northern

Now that’s how you end a day of fishing! 😀

... fly fishing spring BC Northern with flyguys.net North!
30 minutes earlier …….

We’re trolling into the boat launch , just as we’re about to reel in a truck whips in and backs down the launch to pick up his boat. I look at Steve and say “ leave your line out I’ll do a figure 8 in front of the launch until this guys out of our way”. I just got turned and parallel  to the shore and my rod bends back. I yelled at Steve to take the wheel as I fight what feels like a decent fish. He maybe was in control for 30 seconds and BAM his rod bends way back. His fish shows right away on the surface and there is no doubt that it’s a nice fish. At this point the boat is shut off and we are at the mercy of the wind  trying to keep to hot fish from braiding up our fly lines. I get mine in the net and thought about trying to net Steve’s but that would have been a net overload! Steve got a quick shot of mine and we concentrated on landing his …all good. Continue reading

Winter Kill & Trophy Trout …

It’s easy to understand how the term “winter kill” could be perceived negatively by many angling enthusiasts.  Once we understand what it is and how it typically influences our small, productive waters, however, we might be surprised to learn that as often as it can detract from angling experiences, it can augment them. It can actually create some rather spectacular quality fishing opportunities. Winter kill & trophy trout?

Iron Man Chromie Chironomid Fly …

Whether it’s floating line under an indicator or long lining on a fast sink, since I first moved back to the interior a few years ago, a vast majority of my brain has been overtaken by an obsession of catching  Big Bows on tiny little hooks. Here’s my IRON MAN Chromie Chironomid Fly Pattern!

Rainbow Dinner

... delicious rainbow trout for dinner!

Well the first snow a couple of weeks ago automatically kicked in the winter/survival/ hibernation check down list. It’s a list of things to do before the blizzards come.

1) Mow the lawns one last time … Nope
2) Put hoses away … Nope
3) Turn off water to outside taps … Nope
4) Put away lawn/deck furniture … Nope
5) Put up Xmas lights … Nope
6) Dig out snow shovels … Nope
7) Put on some extra weight … CHECK … Well at least I’ve got one thing done!
8) Put boat to bed … Yikes is it that time already … Nope!

I figure I’ve got 5 weeks if I’m lucky so time to get the boat in some water. Continue reading

Giant Wild Alpine Trout

... Wild Alpine Rainbow Trout

Is there a better way to spend Canada Day then hiking in and setting up on the shores of a Rocky Mountain lake with giant wild alpine trout? NOPE! Steve, Aaron, Mitch and myself  were preparing to head  back to the lake we hit up last year.  This year we were going in a couple of weeks earlier and my son Timbre was joining us. We had lined up 3 pack horses and under full packs we started our climb up to Mutton Manor( more on  this later). Of course the three young bucks set a blistering pace pulling away from Steve and I. Funny thing though they would always fall back towards us. I would like to think that it was a little respect for their elders but I knew it was because we were packing the Defender (loaded with 6 slugs). My knees and rehabbed ankle hung in there but evidently  I need  a new thermostat as I was over heating pretty good by the time we made the summit. That beer at summit break was the best tasting  one I’d had in a long while… well maybe since the mid ascent beer break. We made our way down to the lake the excitement building with every step. Welcome Home – 2014 Northern BC Fishing Report

Big BC Bull Trout

Well after 5 days of fishin’ and cavorting it was time to turn the jeep around and head home. That was one tough drive! What normally takes me 11 hours took 12 plus. Two nights of fishing and two nights with the boys and I put everyone to bed all four nights. At the GOEG that required 3:30 AM both nights then up for breakfast around 8:00AM. My advantage was that they live there but when I get back to the ol’ stomping grounds I want to soak in every second I can. Continue reading

Flyguys North Kamloops Fishing Adventure 2014

BC Rainbow Trout

I got the email early April that a date had been selected for the GOEG IV and it was May 30 + 31. The GOEG (Gathering Of Extraordinary Gentlemen) is a get together, for as many as can make it, of all the yahoos I grew up and went to school with. Located on the shores of Okanagan Lake, at a buddies cabin, it’s a weekend of eating large, drinking hard and stories around the fire. First thing that popped into my head was that I have to parlay this into a pre-event fishing trip like Steve and I did two years ago … flyguys Northern Division Kamloops Fishing Adventure 2014! The wife on being informed of all this piped up, ”Good Maggie (dog) and I will come with you and you can drop us off at my mom’s place,” I replied that I didn’t think there would be enough room and I was only half joking. By the time I load the Yeti and all my fishing/camping gear there’s not much room. But yes, you guessed it, I made room, for I’m not a complete idiot!

Sheridan Deep Water Chironomids …

So what to do in June for Chironomid fishing?

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

My May was not filled with chronie fishing anywhere near as much as I would have liked so Rob and I had to make a plan. We hit a couple local lakes and each time we drove we discussed a trip somewhere. The ideas would fly and after whittling it down to just a few Rob left it to me to make the final decision. My previous experiences at Sheridan are limited to waiting most of the day for just one or two fish with the chance that one of those may be a pig, but with the chronie season winding down around the Loops area lakes that prospect didn’t sound so bad … so Sheridan deep water chironomids it was!

Rock Bottom Stonefly Nymph Fly

Rock Bottom Stonefly Nymph Fly Pattern

Rock Bottom Stonefly Nymph Fly Pattern

In our effort to leave no stone unturned, I bring you the Rock Bottom Stonefly nymph …

Although not common, every now and then I see giant stone flies fluttering around in the late spring early summer up this way. This is my version to represent them. Stone flies are important when they’re coming off but the nymphs are also on the menu in the spring before any major hatches get going. Tie lots because you’re going to leave some on the stream/river bottom if you’re fishing  them properly!

Now before you run off to find a skillet or wok this is not one of those delicious recipes that you will find on this site. No this is a recipe for a fry fly (smolt fly) and I dare you to find a simpler one. All that’s required is two hackles, a hook, some thread and a fish skull.

Groundhog day doesn’t hold much weight up here in the North East corner of B.C. We really don’t care if some Eastern, flea ridden, rodent comes out of its den, dressed in a smoking jacket and does a jig.

Nothing will change the fact that, no matter what, we will have at least another six weeks of winter! No for us much more scrutiny is given to the old saying about March. “ In like a lion out like a lamb” or “ In like a lamb and out like a lion.” The old timers seemed to hit that one on the head. So it was that I awoke this morning (March 1) to see minus 32 degrees with a wind chill of 40 below. ROAR. It actually put a smile on my face and to celebrate I decided to head downstairs and tie up a batch of the Olive  Shuttlecock Emerger Fly …
