The Frugal Fly Box | Low Cost Double Decker DIY Fly Box

DIY Fly Box | A Low Cost Double Decker Fly Pattern Organizer

[embedit snippet=”gas-ar-td-minimalist”]

The Frugal Fly Box
A Low Cost Double Decker DIY Fly Box Build

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

The Double Decker DIY Fly Box project came about not so much because of the money, but because of the inability to find a pre made fly box of the size, quality and configuration that I was looking for. Basically, I wanted to reduce the number of my many little fly boxes down to one single package BUT (big but) I wanted that package to be as compact and efficient as possible. So with that in mind I began my search ……. unsuccessfully. 🙁

There were a lot of decent size fly boxes out there but most did not take advantage of their size.  It was frustrating as I really don’t understand the logic behind a three inch plus deep fly box with only one layer. Sure the deeper box has more “volume” but the actual usable “fly holding” real estate is still limited to the length and width regardless of how deep it is. Flies, especially chironomids, are just not that bulky so ……. read on to find out what we did!

– Venison Marinade Glaze –

I like this marinade best with a venison roast that is cooked on the BBQ rotisserie. After letting the roast marinate overnight I then give it a quick rinse and brush on the glaze. This keeps the flavour and juices in the roast while it cooks and makes for a very tasty result!

Bare Bones Chironamo Chironomid Fly Pattern

Bare Bones Chironamo Chironomid Fly Pattern ... hold em steady Gord!

Bare Bones Chironamo Chironomid Fly Pattern

I’m sure all you still water tiers are busy tying chironomids like me right now as ice off progresses!

Now there are certain things that I think we can agree on that we want to incorporate in our fly. We want segmentation of the body –  usually with a rib material. We want something to represent the white gills and also a red butt seems to induce strikes by fish. The problem is, unless you’re tying some of the big bombers species of the interior, you want all this on sizes #12-#18! 😕

I often struggle to add these features and keep the fly from getting too bulky. This fly is my attempt at “less is more”!

Stump Lake Fishing Report – April 6, 2011

...very nice fish!

A beauty Stump lake Early Spring Bow!

Hey Rob thanks for the map and tips … me and a buddy decided to try stump lake!

We launched at the community boat launch with all the picnic tables at noon. It was really windy out so we headed straight across the lake to get free of the wind and fish a couple bays on the side opposite the highway. Tried green, purple, and black leeches with no luck. There were TONS of chironomid hatches so we tried our luck with that, but I guess we didn’t have the right match for the hatch. 😕

So with no bites thus far we headed to the Kamloops end of the lake to troll around the islands and the highway shoreline. The winds picked up and it took us 2 hours to get from the islands back to our boat launch, but on the way nailed a 3 pound rainbow with an orange Doc Spratley!! Success at last! Will definitely stock up on chirnomids and hit that lake again!

Thanks ……. Matt Cumming

Kamloops Lake – March 27, 2011

I just couldn’t take another day of chasing around ice off reports on the Kamloops area lakes so the boys & I packed our packs with fishing gear and enough food to last us the day and off we went to shore fish big Kamloops lake. A Non-Fishy Brined BBQ Trout Recipe

– A Non-Fishy Brined BBQ Trout Recipe –

……. an article by long time BC Interior fly fishing expert Ron Newman … Thanks Ron!

Non Fishy Brined BBQ Trout Recipe - don't like fishy fish ... then check this one out!

Non Fishy Brined BBQ Trout RecipeI’m not overly keen on eating trout or salmon. To me they are just too fishy tasting. However, take that same trout, soak it in a brine overnight and then leave it in my Little Chief Smoker for eight or so hours and it tastes great. The brine and smoking seems to remove most of that fishy taste.

Over the years, I’ve found that I’m not alone in this opinion. A surprising number of folks have expressed this same view about eating trout and salmon. So here is a brined/bbq trout recipe to cook these fish that will remove that fishy taste.

DIY Wire Dubbing Brush Maker

... an inexpensive yet highly effective fly tying tool!

Home Made DIY Wire Dubbing Brush Maker

[embedit snippet=”gas-ar-td-minimalist”]

DIY Wire Dubbing Brush Maker

A quick surf through our fly tying sections and you will quickly notice that we prefer, and strive to create, simple and durable fly patterns. One of the tools which helps us to accomplish these goals is our home made wire dubbing brush maker!

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

The wire dubbing brush maker is a very kewl concept. It was introduced to us by Graham of the old Kamloops “Fine Flies for Fishermen” fly shop and, as the name implies, allows for the spinning of dubbing between wire as opposed to the traditional method of using thread. The result … a dubbing brush of superior strength!

Now why would you want to take the time to build a wire dubbing brush maker when you could just head to the store and purchase one? Well,  no reason really, other than the fact that you’ll spend a whole bunch more money for a product that won’t do anything more for you than a home made version will. But hey money’s not everything so if the DIY idea is not your cup of tea then no worries – a quick Google search reveals that you can get similar units delivered right to your door step from anywhere between $50.00 – $250.00 (plus taxes and shipping of course)!  On the other hand, if you’re the kind of guy that likes the satisfaction of “doing it yourself”, along with saving a bit of money while your at it, then this project is definitively for you! 😉

DIY Mexican Riviera Bonefish Adventure!

I was sitting at my vise tying some chironomids when it hit me that last year at this time I was frantically cranking out bonefish flies. Early Spring Fly Fishing Kamloops Style

Early Spring Fly Fishing Kamloops - Snow Shmoe!

Early Spring Fly Fishing Kamloops Style – Snow Shmoe!

Early Spring Fly Fishing Kamloops Style

Well, it’s the end of February in Kamloops and I, like many others have had my “early ice-out dreams” dampened by the latest cold snap. The bulk of the Interior’s stillwaters are likely locked up in winter’s grip for another month and a half, give or take. If I was not the optimistic (yeah, right), resourceful (or is that resourceless?) hopeless angling addict that I am, I’d mope around town talking trash about everyone that has had a chance to go somewhere warm and sunny this winter. Luckily, I’ve been around the proverbial block a few (too many) times and have been lucky enough to learn some early spring angling opportunities that have (mostly) helped me from becoming a grumpy ogre at this time of year. In the pursuit to bring happiness to all anglers that enjoy the southern Interior’s angling bounty, I will share a few locations that have potential to offer opportunities early in the new year. ……. read on for early spring fly fishing opportunites in the Kamloops area!

Pulled Venison Roast Recipe

[embedit snippet=”gas-336×280-ti”]

This is one of my son’s favourite ways to eat roast.  It is super easy, put it on in the morning and at supper your meal is ready.  Meat cooked this way comes out very tender due to the slow cooking in the beer or wine.  You can also use up some of the tougher cuts because you just can’t cook a roast this way and have it come out tough!   Once it is cooked the meat just pulls apart in strips with forks.  This type of meat is great for sandwiches, fajitas, and with gravy over mashed potatoes.

……. as usual – delicious! check it out!

Williston Lake Slush Fishing!

A week into the New Year and I finally get a chance to head out for some ice fishing. They were calling for snow to start around noon and progress into a blizzard (50km winds) in the evening. The temperature was fine at -12C but it was suppose to get back to daytime highs in the low – 20’s starting in the evening. Small window… more like a portal.

....... very nice fish!

Turn Over | Lake Stratification – beautiful British Columbia!

[embedit snippet=”gas-auto-responsive-link-ad-minimalist”]

For many of us some of the terminology and slang associated with our sport is extremely confusing. “Turn over” (lake stratification) is one of those terms and every year, especially during the winter when fishermen are anticipating ice off and dreaming about spring fishing, we get a lot of questions about it and its relationship to fishing. What does it really mean and, more importantly, how does it affect us as fly fishers. Of all the answers that we have seen, we feel that the following by Todd Oishi does the best job of explaining it all!

Boxing Day Rainbows

Well it’s been a hell of a year and what better way to wind it up than a boxing day ice fishing trip with family & friends!

oink!

Genna with a PIG of a boxing day rainbow trout!

So after a quick check of the weather and the solunar tables we packed up the gear, bundled up the kids and headed for the hills! The tables indicated a major feed in the wee hours of the morning but that was just too early for the kids so we resisted rushing to meet the major and targeted the minor feed – a comfortable 12 noonish! 🙂

When we finally arrived at the lake we were surprised to find that we were the only ones there.  A bit worried that perhaps the bite was off we set up anyway to test out the situation for ourselves. Fifteen minutes  later and ……. nothing. A half hour later and ……. still nothing. And then, just as we were about ready to pull out the gear and relocate to a different area of the lake, ……. you’ve got to hear the rest of this story!
