Another Fall 2011 fishing report from Northen BC!

  2. Ed says:

We are planning to go to Peterhope or Roche lake mid October. Any reports on either and which would be the better lake. I understand Peterhope and be called Peterhopeless> Please advise. Thank you

    • Rob says:

Both great lakes but I’d put my money on Roche. Either way be prepared to stay out all day as the bite can be sporadic this time of year and you don’t want to miss it. Oh … and have some boatman patterns handy for those frosty days. πŸ˜‰

  3. Rob says:

Well might as well turn this into an ice on report ……..

    Word is:

    McGillvery is frozen and fishable
Tunkwa is frozen (but I’m sure not thick enough to walk on yet)
The Roche Lake chain is starting to freeze up (about 75% as of yesterday)

If this weather keeps up we should see a whole lot more solid by weeks end! If you know of any ice fishable lakes please post and let us know.

  4. Gord says:

The lakes are all frozen up here, except for Dinosaur and Williston, so it’s river fishing for as long the weather holds. With a company hockey tournament next weekend and the Grey Cup the following weekend I crammed a couple of trips in before December. This is always a fun time as the Bulls are post spawn and in the big river aggressively feeding. The ticket again was big Spin-n-glows bounced and retrieved along bottom. A lot of the hookups were right close to shore and at one point a big bull chased the lure right up into a foot of water. For a second we stared at each other, him wondering where dinner went and me wondering why did I pull out the spin-n-glow so fast. Never saw him again. It’s getting harder and harder to keep the fingers and the reels working so I see where I’ll be picking chinooks or calm sunny days to do any more river fishing. The Ice Age is here so I guess it’s time to fish through the eight inch hole now.

Just spoke with a fella that said he saw people ice fishing little Heffley yesterday! Word is shrimp & yellow ice flies. If anyone goes good luck, be careful & please give us a report when you get back! πŸ˜‰

    • Ron says:

Fished Little Heffley this morning using shrimp and ice flies. Had a bite every few minutes. The fish were small and on the skinny side. Great fishing for kids or those that like lots of action and pan frys.

  6. Rob says:

Well that didn’t take long … it’s official … they’re ice fishing Red and catching them like crazy!!! Only 2″ of ice though so PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!

PS … Horseshoe is also reported frozen and fishing well!!!

  7. Rob says:

It’s ice on at Edith! πŸ™‚

    • Rob says:

Some talk on Edith on our facebook page as well … I’m working on a way to amalgamate the comments but in the meantime please check it out (and don’t forget to give us a thumbs up if you “like” what you see!) πŸ™‚

  8. Rob says:

Red’s hot, Black’s not & Horseshoe’s coming on!!! Check out the full reports on our facebook page! πŸ˜‰

  9. Ron says:

Fished Edith on Monday the 5th. Caught 2 small ones; a brookie and a rainbow. The fish seemed to be sluggish and were not biting aggressively. I’ve never done well there but the lake seems popular judging by the holes everywhere along the lake. Ice was about 4-6 inches thick but was making all kinds of noise as it groaned and cracked in several spots.

    • Rob says:

Thanks Ron! I’ve had some good days there but I’ve noticed there are more slow days than hot days. I might give it a try this weekend.

    • Lance says:

Yes, fish seem to be quite small at this time in edith. I see them often cursing around my hole and sniffing my bait, but when they bite, it’s pretty soft, when they feel my jig head in their mouths, they spit it out. Sometimes they don’t give up and come back again.
However, it is enough to make me keep losing them all the time. it takes about 8 bites to land me a fish, quite frustrating sometimes.
I use the smallest jig head i could, but still have the same result.
wondering how to put the worm on the jig to hook the fish more effectively, any ideas?

      • Frank says:

I’ve had good luck at Edith using pale yellow glo hooks baited with maggots. I’ve also had a few good days with shrimp but the maggots seem more consistent. Never tried worms but I’m sure you’d probably do better with them than just a bare jig.

        • Lance says:

I landed 6 this morning with the glo hooks but could only keep a big one.
However, took the advice from Frank the glo hook, worked out pretty good. though still losing a lot from soft bites, it’s much better than the jig heads.
My pink artificial maggots didnt work very well, the fish sniffed them once and then swam away. are you using live maggots Frank?

          • Frank says:

They make artificial maggots??? πŸ˜‰ Yes try the live ones and I think your hook up rate will improve. πŸ™‚

    • ollie says:

 been doing Edith lk for the past few weeks limit out in 1hr and sometimes 1/2hour pulling the hook from the little one’s and hooking the bigger ones 1 1/2 lbs + . Cant wait till the big rainboos but no rush . many other lakes to punch holes into. πŸ˜† fish in the morning and only fish 7′ deep fish are 16″ from the ice and feed till the top meal worms seem to work the best.   good luck

      • Lance says:

        wow.really?
in my theory, the big rainbows ate too much in the fall, now it’s just the early winter,so they are not hungry enough to swim to the shallow. that makes it difficult to locate them.
will try your advice and see what happens. thanks for that ollie

  10. Emilio says:

    • Rob says:

Nice! Care to share any details (fishing depth / what you were using / time of day / etc)?

      • Emilio says:

OK, sitting a foot off the bottom with shrimp and they were hitting all day! Other than that, along the shore line about 20-30 ft out.

        • Emilio says:

I Don’t get out as often as I would like so when things like this happen, I will be posting it HERE!

          • Lance says:

Hi, Emilio. thanks for share the info. but the lake is large, so if you could share some more details about the spot on the lake, id appreciate it.

          • Emilio says:

Well Lance, We were on the East side of the lake….There is one spot that I particularly like, that one I will keep to me….sorry.

          • Lance says:

            Thanks for that Emilio.
No worries, it’s good enough for the telling me the east side.

Heffley lake ice fishing report just posted on “the page“! Check it out!

  13. Harrison says:

Great Fishing at Edith this past week quite a few nice ones really shallow early mornings and sunset bite
    [img][/img]

  14. Harrison says:

Slow morning today on Edith still caught a few and a real nice one, very cold!!! How did everyone else do?

Also going to Red Lake in the early am, will be first time there, any tips?

    • Lance says:

I think I saw you and you buddy on edith a couple times.i agree, its very cold there because the lake has few trees to stop the wind.
well, i went to red lake last week, people seemed to have good lucks around the shallow by the little island off the boat launch. i took their advice using shrimps and krills, worked out great, got a couple nice brookies.
just cant wait to go there again, much more productive than edith at this time.

      • Harrison says:

Yep been at Edith most days the last 2 weeks, fishing has been good. Today went to Red Lake and fishing was slow however still caught a couple really nice brook trout, there was another man fishing around the other side of the island and pulled out about an 8-10lbs rainbow it was huge.

Anyone else out fishing today what was it like out there?

        • Lance says:

Havent been up there for 2 weeks from now,but heard from jeff and rob while fishing on campbell lake this morning, fish are less but still near that island by the boat launch

        • Rob says:

Ye s they are still catching them at red, and some are huge, but the action is not as fast as it usually is this time of year. Still worth the trip though IMO.

PS … nice to meet you today Lance! πŸ™‚

  15. Jayme says:

Fished Campbell Lake Saturday morning. We caught eight fish in two hours! It was steady action most of the morning. Heard reports that it died off at 11:30 or so.

    Anybody fish Scuitto yet?
