As before, please use the comments / reply section at the end of the post to share and discuss your 2011 fishing reports. Please include the name of the lake (or at least the general area that you were in π ), what worked, what didn’t and as many other details as you care to share. A picture is worth a thousand words so please feel free to include one or two as well! If you’ve got a question regarding a particular lake or fly pattern (or whatever) ask it here as well and hopefully someone will chime in with an answer for you!
That’s it folks! Might work, might not but weβll give it a try and see how it goes! Check it out below! π

Hey guys & gals just to let you know I’m posting up some of the pics submitted on our flyguys.net facebook page ….. check it out and please feel free to join the page (like?) and comment / post / etc.
Another May day … another Kamloops area lake and another silver bullet Pennask. This guy just tips the 6 lb mark and was taken on a size #14 little boy blue chironomid pupa with a red rib. Have had good luck with this pattern this year when fishing deep water chironomids.

Tis the season …. get out there folks! π
Here’s part of a conversation that was posted earlier…
I donβt get it. There are enough fish and room in that lake for everyone. I like to tell people who are curious before they feel embarassed to ask just to help them out.

Strange how the secrecy of the “Kamloops Area Lake” and what type of chironomid to use have something in common….
I don’t get that either… oh well…what can you do…
Fortunately I spent the weekend at a “Kamloops Area Lake”, met one of the nicest guys who ties amazing flies and even gave us a couple to help us out…we spent the rest of the 2 days hammering nice rainbows, biggest was lost and who knows how big he was, but numerous were 4 and 5 lbs… too bad I just can’t remember what lake that was or I could have shared it…
“food for thought”
lol … Jim Mark clearly said, and you quoted it, “on that lake” meaning Roche. Roche is a very public lake AND both people were already on the lake fishing side by side. If you look back on the posts you will see that we regularly share everything about the big public lakes like Roche, Hefley, Tunkwa, etc. including depth and pattern – hell I even post the recipes for the patterns in our fly tying section – some with video for your convenience. BUT (big but) I would get my ass kicked, and this blog would get real ugly real fast if we started posting the names of all the small little gems that couldn’t stand the pressure that may bring to it. Anyway, to clarify my main point was that both guys were already on the lake so what’s the big deal, especially on a lake like Roche.
So what’s the point of even posting about the other “Kamloops Area Lakes” then you ask … well it’s our hope to encourage people to get out and learn and enjoy this great pass time that we love so much. You might not think that’s important but in our opinions the lake really matters very little in developing as a fly fisher relative to getting out on ANY lake and gathering experience … and along the way everyone will stumble into their own little gems and can decide to share them or not.
Oh and PS: I shared the actual fly, the size and the depth I was fishing when I caught the fish in the post you quoted and can assure you if you were fishing beside me on the lake and asked I would have gladly shared it with you then as well.
And this will be the end of this discussion because I do not want to derail this thread – if you would like to continue in private please email me. So, moving on, congratulations on your fishing weekend – it sounds like you had a blast. We would love to see some pictures! π

hey fellas, greats posts and website. As far as keeping lakes and patterns a secret I am the opposite. I enjoy tying and always give a few away and let guys know where and how I use them. Especially to those who are just starting out. To each his own I guess.
Thought I would post a pic from a recent trip out to Gardom. A lake 10mins from my house in Salmon Arm. These FVs have grown from 14″ this time last year to 3-4lbs this year. #14 light olive, silver rib, and black bead head chirony.
I agree with you Rob, the point is to get people out and enjoy the outdoors and the MANY lakes this province offers. We all have our favourite spots and after all isn’t catching the fish a bonus?
Wow … those guys have been chowing down big time since last year! Beautiful fish! Thanks for sharing the pics and the fly recipe! π
Hey LMU,
Are those the fish they stocked after they poisoned the lake a couple of years ago to get rid of coarse fish? If so, they have really come on nice. Also, how was the numbers? I read somewhere they put in good numbers once they restocked.
Hi Ted, those fish were stocked just last year shortly after the lake was poisoned to remove bass and perch. I was surprised when they opened the lake to the public so soon afterward. They have put on phenomenal growth in such a short period of time.
A good link to see stocking reports:
http://a100.gov.bc.ca/pub/fidq/stockedSpeciesSelect.do
The lake is basically an urban one and gets a ton of pressure so the stocking is high.
Same thing happened to Pass a few years back (kill not poisoning) so they stocked it with FV catchables and some of those little pigs put on 6 – 7 pounds in a few years! Thanks for the great link!
YARN INDICATOR – does anyone have some good info on yarn indicators that can go through the guides. Saw an older gentleman (in the wooden dory) using this method at Roche(long weekend) in deep water. The indicator looked like it also had something higher (more visible) sticking out the top. Seemed to work really well in 24 ft of water, cast well, and went through the guides like butter. i have been looking online and found lots of info that calls for o rings – can these go through the guides? What material works best? I bought some o rings so i am going to make my own and give it a try.
Hey Mark I’ve seen those O ring ones before but haven’t tried them for fear that they would not go in or out (perhaps at high speed) of the top guide well. All the ones I’ve seen that do go through the guides easily are simply yarn tied in place at the specific depth you need on the leader (just the yarn – no rubber) – effective but a PITA if you are changing depths regularly. Very curious to hear the results of your experiment … keep us posted.
Giving a fishing report without naming the lake is like giving an ice-off report without naming the lake. Pretty much useless. The money for stocking these lakes all comes from the same place, the BC fisheries. Lets not be afraid to help out our fellow angler with some actual tips they can use.
Most of these reports give you information that can be used successfully on most lakes. Lot’s of depth, time of day and fly choice so to call them useless doesn’t ring true. In my situation up North we don’t have a 1000 lakes within 2 hrs of us and some of the lunker lakes wouldn’t sustain all the pressure if I just threw out there names. Besides I’d be a shot. Sorry. Actually there is only one lake I won’t mention for the above reasons. The other thing is part of development in becoming a better fisherman is to get out experiment and try stuff on your own. You’d be suprised how many times thinking outside the box works. One of my best days on a lake came when I tried a big stonefly nymph I tie for the river. You never know. Lastly one of the great Kamloops fly fishers who shared so much information with us through his books, Jack Shaw tended to be pretty tight lipped when out fishing.
I have heard that Logan Lake completely winterkilled from a number of different people is this true?
I was in Logan lake two weeks ago and was told the aerator shut down over the winter, so they lost the fish in the lake. I haven’t talked to anyone that has different facts.
Congrats to JeFF … first of the boys to hit double digits with this beauty bow!

I was at campbell lake May.27 and fishing was pretty good we had a fish on in 10mins even with a late start 8am average fish were 2lbs we had 4 fish in the boat was almost only 3 but i won the fight agenced the loon hooked my fish then βjawsβ the loon came from under the fish grabed him then whent 100 ft straight down nearly breaking my rod tied the line onto the rod holder then spat the fish and go it in one hell of a memorie β¦β¦ leaches with red and exotic looking choronimids will be productive and for the rest of you who know what the campbell spechal is it was the winning ticket all day and for you gang trollers i noticed a ford fender with a 12inch or longer leader with a worm was working
Thanks for the report Kevin! Sounds like the fishing was fast & furious!
Howdy,
Hit Salmon lake last week. Had a mixed bag of fish. Alot of 10- 13 inch fish which some guys said were just stocked and others said were from last year. About a 5 to one ratio of the “stockers” to your 16 to 19 inch fish…19 being the biggest I caught. I like to troll and look for spots to chronie fish. Trolling, the best I did was with a white beadhead wooly bugger with lots of flash. Though I picked up a few on pumpkinheads.
My favorite chronie was a snowcone black with red wrap as it has been for a couple years. I fish it in eastern Washington also. I did well with the create a hatch pattern that I got off this site, thanks flyguys.
I hit Pratt lake and another small lake that the name escapes me. Pratt was turning and pretty dark but I got 3 including one nice one. Bet that lake is hot right now…wish I could make it back.
Salmon was alot busier then last year when I was there..but Mike and Andrea were real accomodating. Good people!
Well might make it back in July, if not will be next May again..thanks to Rob and all on this site!
Greg
Thanks Greg! I was wondering how Salmon lake was fishing. Could that other lake have been “Todd”?
It was cold, wet and misserable but we had a day of so ……. we went fishing! π

Going to Roche next week for the week, could any like to explainthe lake
to my wife and me. Where is monster bay? An other tips would be gratefull.
Thanks
Hi Walter. Monster bay is south of the west launch just across from “cabin” bay (the bay with the cabin on the point. If you get a hold of the gang at the Roche lake resort I think they may have a map with the names of all the prominent fishing areas. Good luck – you should be into some great fishing next week!
Hey everyone check it out … sent in from Brian Chan is this picture of his May 2011 Roche lake 10 lb + Pennask rainbow trout!

Good old Roche lake! Way to go Brian and thanks for sharing this with flyguys.net! π
