Hello everyone, I am looking for a Canadian supplier of UTC thread. I used to get it from wholesale sports………..Any suggestions? supplies getting very low.

    Thanks in advance!

    • Avatar photo Brandyn says:

Hey Greg, Togens has a good selection of danville threads that are similar to UTC. There are some colors of UTC I prefer and lately have just been calling trout waters in kelowna and over the phone they are able to walk through the store for me and select anything I need. Ive been getting my UTC threads this way, shipping is very reasonable and they seem to always have what I need in stock. Hope this helps! Cheers bud

    thanks Walter

  6. Darryl says:

Based on historical ice-off dates and average historical February and March temperatures, if you will remember last year I came up with the following for Six Mile Lake:
Ice Off Day of Year = 96.1 – (4.7 x T), where T is the average Temperature for February and March combined.

Unfortunately, this February was cold…average temperature for the month (Kamloops Airport) was -5.7 C, it is usually + 0.1 C, and the average temperature for March is usually + 5.2 C and this year it looks like we may be around + 3.7 C (it is a bit early, but based on the forecast and some assumptions…). So, that being said, here is my early prediction for Ice Off at Six Mile:
    96.1 -(4.7 * -1) = 110.8 = Day of Year 111 = April 11. Note the -1 is the average combined Feb + Mar temperature.
This seems really late. I hope I am wrong. The prediction is plus or minus 8 days (other variables like wind and snow depth sitting on the lake are important) so not a perfect predictor, but to give you a bit of an idea.

Did the same thing for Red Lake: May 2 – Wow that is late. Again, I hope my prediction models suck and I am wrong and we are all out on the water much earlier than that.

When I have the actual average temperature for this March I will re-post with an update. I also think I had a prediction formula for Red Lake that included average April temperature as well, but I can find it. I may have to redo it. Again, when I do, I will re-post.

Although I’m not happy with the prediction dates, I look forward to your calculations each year Darryl! πŸ™‚

      • Darryl says:

Thank you!! Again, hopefully this is all just hocus-pocus and it ices off early. Maybe a few good wind storms will speed things up. Ha ha…only the people on this site would hope for wind storms at this time of year.

    • Darryl says:

It should be noted that during an average year, Ice Off for Six Mile occurs on March 25 plus or minus 8 days (March 17 – April 3) so April 11 is late…like 2 1/2 weeks late.

    • Darryl says:

Just a quick note- The answer to the above calculation for Six Mile should be 100.8 [(96.1 – (- 4.7)) = 96.1 + 4.7 = 100.8] not 110.8 and thus Year Day 101, which unfortunately, is April 11.

  7. Jesse says:

Having moved to PG from Kamloops the end of last summer I am focused on dragon for my early season fishing. Seeing how Darryl is making his predictions using what good data I could find my predictor is saying between april 24-30th for dragon ice off depending on how much of april or febuary temperatures I add into the equation, the best fit for past dates is the april 24th one tho :). This seems pretty reasonable to me.
Thanks for throwing you calculations up Darryl. I can update this as we get some more actual temperatures as well as a better idea for the forecast.

Posted by John (thank you!) today on the FB page … Six Mile & Morgan:

    • Avatar photo fog says:

Is that picture of the Morgan lake that is closer to Kamloops? There is another one near Merrit!
      Thanks

      • Avatar photo Brandyn says:

Hey fog, these pictures are of six mile (pat) lake. Which is located right near the Morgan lake you mentioned closer to Kamloops.

        • Avatar photo fog says:

Thanks Brandyn! Have you had much luck fly fishing after ice off before turn over on that lake? Are there any campsites located on the lake? Nice fish man!

          • Avatar photo Brandyn says:

Hey bud, both can be fished pre turnover no problem. Niether of the lakes have campsites but you might be able to find something close by to set up camp at. Tightlines!

  9. Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Six Mile Morgan still looked to be at least a week away today πŸ™ but at least we got to wet a line at Kamloops on the way πŸ™‚

  10. 5A Flyfisher says:

Brent Gill posted video of Nicola iced off today,,,,march 27

  11. Avatar photo Steve41 says:

Any idea when Stump and Courtney might be ice free?
    thanks in advance πŸ™‚

    • Art Vandelay says:

Tough to tell right now. Stump could be as much as two weeks away (given the current weather forecast) and Courtenay won’t be happening until at least April 20.

  12. fishinchicken says:

Any update on six mile Morgan this week?

  13. paul says:

Logan lake is toast looks like 100% kill. I believe the 02 system went on the fritz this year.
