Any reports for Roche. Wanna get one more fish in there next weekend.
It was already starting to fish well last week (https://flyguys.net/fishing-reports/flyguys-net-ice-off-2013-fishing-reports/comment-page-18#comment-8870 ) so I’m thinking you should have some fun! God luck!
I have been fishing Roche Lake and doing very well with fish to 5lbs.Most productive was micro leach under a indicator in shallow water.I have pumped fish and there mostly full of shrimp.Dress warm and enjoy the action.

Red Lake Brook Trout.
I finally got to putting up a blog post on my own site and I forgot to post something here as I promised Rob I would do.
I recently made a trip for the first time up to Red Lake to target Brook Trout. I had never fished the lake before, and I hadn’t fished for Brook Trout before either, so I was looking forward to it. I didn’t have a lot of time to fish, but the morning was awesome to say the least. Such beautiful fish. Thanks to Rob for sharing some intel before I went. Here are some pics of the morning and the successful fly of the day.
I am really looking forward to going back again next year. You can check out my full report by visiting my blog at Click Here.

The fly I had my success on was this one …….
[img][/img]
It’s a really easy tie and I have a lot of luck with this fly on lakes. I tie it in a variety of colours such as black/red, maroon, and olive sparkle with different coloured beads.
That’s just awesome Len thanks for the report! Sorry for the troubles posting … I think I have everything fixed up and in one post for you now π
Len great blog on Red Lake, I am wanting to get 2 kyaks next spring. Also I was wondering where you saw that wolf, theirs too many now in that area, seeing them more and more. Last year a friend saw one dragging a fawn across Red when it was frozen.
Yesterday the lake was calm, attached find a pic (Cold but ice free)

Nice work, those brookies have some girth! I’ve been managing a couple trips to the Adams. Not unreal fishing but steady enough, usually half a dozen fish landed by 10 and then call it a day. Good fun with the 5wt and current…
[img][/img]
Beauty!
Yeah, they were fatties alright. . I heard the Adams is a lot of fun this time of year on single egg patterns. I will have to put that down on my must do list for next year.
Yep, it is good fun and fairly straight forward…don’t need a boat or anything. Let me know if you want some pointers. You’ve got me inspired to give Red a go before freeze up… we’ll see how the weather is but will likely give it a try next Sunday unless someone convinces me that Roche is a better bet. Do the brookies fish well this time of the year? Typically 10fow or less or should I bring the fast sink line along?
10 ft of water is great for the brookies. Target just a few feet from the weeds and algae beds. Around the islands is also great for the brookies in that shallow water. If you have another rod, bring a sink line to target big bows in deeper water…I tend to find them at 10 to 15 feet in 17 to 25 feet of water. Flies for brookies same as for bows, at least this is what I have found at Red at this time of year. Spring is different, not sure why, but that is what it is for me anyways.
Cheers,
Darryl
PS: I am going to hit it one last time on Sunday as well. Often starts to freeze by the end of the first week of November.
Right on, thanks Darryl! Not sure if I’ll go up sat or sun yet but if you see a maroon dodge diesel or red 12″ aluminium stop for a quick BS.
the force: I am a little worried with these cold nights with clear skies that Red is going to freeze a little earlier than I expected. When i was there two weeks ago the water temp was a full 2 degrees colder than at the same time last year. Hopefully it is still open for Sunday. I am going to try for Sunday, but the forecast suggests that it might be rainy. Monday may be better with increasing pressure and no rain. Long story short, I may not see you, but if I do go Sunday I have a red tacoma and will be parked at the Strom parking area / boat launch and will be in a dark green porta-boat. I usually fish the north part of the lake. Hope you have a great day on the water. let us know how you did.
Cheers,
Darryl
Heading to Roche this weekend. Hope the weather holds out and the fish are still biting. Has it been windy around there?
Fished Roche this weekend. Lots of fish tight in the weeds. Hooked lots using micro leech under indicator. Nothing huge but lots of action. Weather kind of changed the game out there as it snowed all weekend. Good luck to anyone who heads out. Dress warm.
Thanks for the report FC! JeFF told me he was having good luck on bigger fish using a leech with a fast strip retrieve. Fingers crossed I can get out once more before ice on to try it for myself!
Fished Red on Sunday. I was the only one on the water. Water surface temperature was 4.7 C, while the air was cold, ranging from -1 to + 1 C. Overcast, and snow all day. Fishing was good. Two nice bow’s (one 4lb 4 oz, one 3 lb 7 oz) and 6 good sized football brookies, the largest being 2 lb 8 oz, all on olive leech / woolly bugger patterns. Lost three other fish. Also had countless strikes, but the fish were not hitting the flies as hard as usual. Hard to say when the lake may start to freeze to the point that you can’t take you boat out, but if you can get out there I found the fish to be a little further out from the weeds than you find them at the end of September and through much of October. Troll / strip slowly. When hooked the fish are very, very feisty this time of year so hold on tight.
Thanks for the report Darryl! I have a few more lakes on my list to try and hit before ice up … Red is one of them!
Good luck out on Red. It can be such a good lake when it is on. I would love to hit it one more time. My only day free this week is Friday. Might hit it one last time. If I don’t, I know I will regret it all through the winter π Hope it does not freeze too much by then.
Cheers,
Darryl
Right on Darryl! I didn’t make it, the weather was a little dicey and other things came up. Still managed to get out for a couple hours on Sunday for a bit of an adventure Roche Lake way and put a couple brookies in the boat. Pumpkin head trolled on a type 6 was the ticket…casting and indicator didn’t bring anything. Also, casting isn’t ideal with ice forming on the guides! That’s probably it for a while, out of town for the next two weekends.
the force: The road up was dicey for sure. Not sure if it will be open when you get back. Going tomorrow (fingers crossed) and will let you know about the road and water conditions.
Cheers,
Darryl
Hey rob
I’m looking got a couple of those flyguys decals for my boat. How or where do I find them.
Hey FC they are available on our online store page but if you live in/near Kamloops just email me with how many you would like and we’ll work out the pickup/dropoff details. Oh and for you and anybody else that contributes to the page they are on the house! π
Hey Darryl you had a great “ice-off” formula worked out in the spring that was fun to follow. You did a great job and were very close regarding most lakes. Have you done the same for “ice-on”? I’m looking forward to stretching the open water out as long as I can and I won’t be surprised if you’ve got this tracked….Wind-free days are great in a boat in a snow storm…..
Hi Joe,
No, I have not developed on ice-on model, although the thought did cross my mind. I know I don’t have the time to do it this year, but I may look into it over the winter to see if I can come up with anything. Right now I think we have to go with what people are reporting on this page. My plan is to try and hit Red Lake tomorrow. I will give an ice-on report when I get back.
Red Lake was ice free yesterday (Friday) except for a couple of small patches in the channel that connects the north and south basins of the lake. The fishing was good again, with big brookies and bows. Caught my largest brook trout to-date – 3. 75 lbs. I know there are much larger brook trout in there, and that is what will keep me coming back. With the warmer than normal temps forecasted for this week there is still time to get out there. I was doing well on green wooly buggers, but caught the larger fish, both bows and brookies more than 3 lbs, using large olive leaches. By large I mean 3 inches. If you can make it up before it freezes I highly recommend that you do. Again, i was the only one on the water. Water surface temp was 38 F, or around 3 C, there was no or very, very little wind all day and the sun came out for a couple of hours pushing the thermometer to 7 degrees on the plus side for a short while yesterday. Most of the day it hovered around 2 to 3 C. Ok, well if someone else goes keep us up to date on the freezing and of course on the fishing π
Cheers,
Darryl
Was up in the Roche lake area today. Looks like the ice is on it’s way. π

Word just in from Chris at BCLakefronts … Ice On Red Lake! But just on so don’t be rushing out quite yet! π
” alt=”Red Lake Frozen 2013″ />
Drove down the Coq yesterday, ice was on Walloper and Stake. I wouldn’t go out there but shouldn’t be too much longer with some low temps.
Wow this cold weather will be putting ice on lakes everywhere.
My favorite is Monte.
If anyone has any info as to whether it has ice, let me know.
Thanks
Yep, catching those koke’s through the ice is always fun. Will let you know.
Just drove past Monte on Sunday the 17th it was nowhere near freezing from what I could tell. Also last year, I don’t believe it froze over until sometime after Christmas, as I always drive by on my way to my in-laws in Vernon.
