flyguys.net Official 2011 Kamloops Area Lakes Ice Off Report

So this year we wanted to try to keep all of the ice off reports in one post.  We decided that the easiest and most efficient way to accomplish this was to use the comments / reply section at the end of the post. Might work, might not but we’ll give it a try and see how it goes! Check it out below! 😉

* To visually keep on top of the ice off situation heck out our BC lakes, rivers & highways webcams page!

Thanks & come on ice off!

I’m leaving Nanaimo and heading to Knouff lake in 3 weeks and starting to wonder if I should rebook my cabin, sounds like you guys and having a long winter up there. Has anyone heard if the ice is off Knouff yet? If so is there any fishing reports coming out aswell? Cheers

    • Ben says:

      Hey Salt,

I’m guessing Knouff should be just off or happening as we speak. I don’t know how the fishing will be, but my guess is that you will be after turnover and the bugs should be going well by that time. It’s been a slightly later winter than normal, but not absurdly late by any means. I think you timing will be good and the nearbly lakes (Badger, Community, Heffley) should be about the same.

      Have fun and good luck!
      Ben

Thats what I wanted to hear, thanks Ben. Knouff will be more of a base camp for me anyways, i’ve fished it a few times and done alright, but not great. What i’ve seen from google earth and reports, community lake looks really interesting to me.

  2. Randy says:

Hello, I heard a nasty rumor that bullman and hosli were showing signs of being winterkiled. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Also I fished Pass yesterday with moderate success, lots of clumps of weeds on the surface, seems to early to be turning but it looks like it might be starting.

    • Rob says:

Hey Randy I have not heard those rumors yet … hopefully that’s all they are. As for Pass the surface water temp when I fished it Friday was 46. As I mentioned in the reports post I thought at this rate it could start or be into turning by mid next week … sounds like the window may be smaller than we thought! 🙁

    • Ben says:

      Hi Randy,

I have not heard those reports, and cannot outright deny this. I have actually heard of a (at least partial) kill on Bulman quite a few years back, but could never confirm it from a reputable source. It would surprise me somewhat, however, as both lakes have a good amount of some very deep water, and neither are vegetation-laden, highly eutrpohic lakes which are what your typical winter-kill candidates usually are (with exception of some very shallow lakes like Six Mile (Pat) and Beaton for example). Further, it has not been an exceptionally long winter (not that that’s the only factor). It will be interesting to hear if either of those lakes gets confirmed to have lost fish.

      Ben

    • Rob Pratt says:

I fished hosli on may11. Fished really good. no signs of winter kill at all. I drove uo to Dairy Lake on May 15. Ice was still on but would be off any day. Duffy was ice free and fished good on tiny chroni’s

  3. Jay says:

    Hey,
I was wondering if anybody knows what going on at Kane Valley at the moment? I was thinking about heading out there this coming week. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    • Ted says:

My buddy and I were in the Kane Valley Friday May 7th. Chicken Ranch had about a football field size area of ice at the north end, all four Kane Lakes were ice off or had small strips of ice along the side away from the road where the trees shaded the water, Harmon was still about 70% iced with really rotten ic(should be off by today) and Englishman was ice off.

  4. mike says:

does anyone know if red lake has opened yet?

  5. Art Vandelay says:

I was told that Badger was 50% open as of yesterday; should be all gone by today! I would imagine that the same would be true for Knouff and Community is probably still a week away.

  6. Poge says:

Good to hear about Red lake. Any predictions on it’s turn over. I’ll be there for three days starting on the 16th.

    • mike says:

lake was pretty clean i could see about 8 feet deep today and i was in a float tube, but the fishing was quite slow compared to ice off last year

      • Poge says:

Thanks for the report Mike. Seems like it should be better fishing. Hope your next outing is lights out.

  7. Mark says:

Any thoughts on lakes open on the north side of Kamloops?

  8. daniel says:

Great site! I am heading to knouff for the long weekend and am really hoping someone can tell me turnover has already passed… Thanks!

  9. Steelface says:

Anyone been up to check Frisken lately? Wondering if it’s close to being off and if there is a possible kill?

  10. Poge says:

Does anyone Know if Peterhope, Plateau, or stake lakes are ice off yet. Heading out on Sunday morning and would like to check out one of these.

    • Rob says:

Spoke with a fellow that was camped at Peterhope & he said it was ice off & fishing well.

      • Poge says:

Thanks Rob. What is the Ice off level right now. I would really like to check out Stake lake @4300′ elev. It could be lights out.

        • Rob says:

I know some 4000 ish foot lakes that are ice free so if Stakes not it should be soon. Hopefully someone on here will be able to update us soon.

          • Poge says:

Thanks Rob, Hope someone can come through with something today. Has Red been fishing well?

          • Ken says:

Drove past Stake on Sunday (on the way home from Tunkwa) and Stake still had ice on but was coming off quick. S/b off completely soon.

  11. Rich says:

    • Dawn says:

We went to Surrey first week of July last year. Caught lots trolling different versions of black leeches and a pumpkinhead, but we also tried trolling other things:-). Cream mayfly nymph worked a couple of times as well. We liked the lake….good luck! 🙂

    • Ted says:

Avid, drove by Surrey this morning and it is totally ice off. You should be good to go this weekend.

  15. Darlene Campbell says:

Anyone know about the Rocky Mountain area ice off?
    Whitetail Deer lake area specifically.
