Went to Roche on Sunday to check it out. I seen lots of dead fish floating around in the lake and stuck in the weeds. The eagles were picking some dead fish out of the ice too. Is this normal for this lake to have a bunch of fish die in the winter? Never heard of this happening at Roche before.Needless to say, we didn’t have any luck fishing. Seen 1 fish jump and didn’t see too much moving around on the fish finder. Picked up and drove to peterhope. All the ice was off, but it was a little windy. Fished out the day in the small bay at the back of the lake to get out of the wind. Got 1 to the boat on a booby. Long day on the lakes with minimal results. Sucks about roche, I didn’t think the stories of dead fish were true till I seen it with my own eyes.

Took a drive to Stump and Horseshoe…did not have time to fish, but some info for you all. Stump was very choppy with the wind today, but still not in full turnover (some suspended weeds, but water still clear). Was at the north end and saw no one fishing. Horseshoe: The lake is split down the middle with open water on the west side and ice cover on the east. Camp site was full of people, and there was one boat on the water. I suspect Horseshoe will be completely ice free in a few days. Horrible to hear about Roche, although I doubt it was a complete kill, which may mean bigger fish later this year and into next year. Happy to hear Red is coming along.

    Cheers,

    Darryl

        Nice … any fishies?

        • Avatar photo Evan says:

…dragged some leeches around for maybe an hour or so searching for a strike but nothing, seen no activity anywhere, wasn’t feeling a productive day there so I packed it in and decided to go where the fishing’s been best for me…Edith! Out of the half a dozen lakes I’ve been to and almost a dozen trips out since the lakes started to thaw I think I’ve probably seen more fish caught and had more action in one day at Edith than everywhere else combined (nothing over 2lbs though). Just my own personal experience anyway I’m sure there are others who may say the opposite. So far it’s been a real slow start to the year for myself personally, hope my luck turns around soon.

I was the one boat on horseshoe. Lots of fish on the finder but not any biting.

  4. Jac Timber says:

I would be extremely grateful if someone could tell me how to upload a pic with my posting and how to edit my posting..

    • Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

      Hey Jac,

To add a pic to your post hit the “browse” button below the comment box and find the file on your computer that you wish to upload. The uploader is finicky … the filename needs to have NO spaces, characters other than numbers & letters, dots “.” (except the one before the extension), and preferably should be sized to 1024 or less. Once it is uploaded you will see the image string in the reply window and you can edit to place it where ever you like (ie. above, below or between text). Once you post your reply the syntax will display as the image.

The other way to display a pic on your post is to link to it from an external URL. To do this use the “Insert Image” button in the comment box tool bar (the green mountain with the sun) and a box will pop up prompting you to enter the image URL. Enter the URL, hit OK and again you will see the image syntax appear in your reply. Once you post your reply the syntax will display as the image.

If you want to embed a facebook photo, youtube video or any other social media images, you can simply paste the embed code right into the comment box and it should display once you post.

As for editing … I’ve got it enabled and should be available to users for up to 10 minutes after their original post. If it is not working let me know and I’ll try to trouble shoot. [EDIT: Just checked and I see the edit is not working on the front end … I will look into it but in the meantime just email me if you want something changed/deleted and I will do it from the backend … my apologies!]

As an FYI to all, using the comment section of a post to act as a forum (as i am doing in this 2014 fishing reports post) is really not optimal and I am working in the background to get a stable dedicated forum going that will be much more user friendly. Now that the open water season is getting under way I’m not sure how much time I’ll have to work on it so thanks for your patients.

[email protected] for anyone that needs any help until I get everything sorted out.

      Hope that helps … πŸ™‚

      Finally got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Persistance pays off! Now how was the fishing?

      • Jac Timber says:

Didn’t fish on this trip just went to see how passable the road was and the condition of the lake (ice-off). Saw one boat on the lake but to far to determine if they were catching any fish. Lots of camper trailers at Scuitto lake oh and quads too LOL

  6. Jesse says:

Got a handful at peter hope today first ones I pumped had mayfly nymphs the last one had a bunch of tiny shiny green chronies. Got em on little green chronies and black micro leeches.

I’m interested to hear if anyone is catching any at roche? I may have to try and do an evening up there to see all the dead fish and see if i can find some live ones.

    • LT says:

Fished roche today no luck. Saw around 3 dozen dead fish at the south end. Did pick some up on the finder though so all is not lost

  7. Ken says:

Duffy lake is covered and is just starting to come off on the north edges. A couple weeks away I would say.

  8. Avatar photo Steve41 says:

A little nervous about the reports of dead fish at Roche! From what I have investigated, lakes will always have some dead fish after each winter. Just worried about the numbers.

  9. jdmck says:

what would the kokanee fishing at monte be like this time of year???

    • The Force says:

I second that question on Monte, how do spring kokes generally bite? I know the ice has been of for a couple weeks now…

    • Art Vandelay says:

I can only speak to my experiences at Stump Lake with regard to spring kokanee fishing. At Stump the kokanee would rarely be caught until about the middle of May when they would start to move into the shallower water to feed on chironomids. At that time you would catch one kokanee for every 20 rainbows or so. By the beginning of June the kokanee catches would become more frequent until you could effectively target them in the 15 to 20 ft depth range. The nice thing was that you could fish kokanee in the deeper areas of the shoals and then target the rainbows by casting towards the reeds with a mayfly nymph. Unfortunately those days are done as the kokanee fishery is all but done at Stump as far as I know.

Monte is not Stump but if you want to target kokanee in the early spring, I suggest you fish water that is at least 30 ft deep and fish a small red leech at various depths until you figure out where the fish are. It will probably be a good idea to just troll this pattern around over deeper water to see if you can find a concentration of fish.

      • The Force says:

Thanks Art, detailed and helpful as always! Will let you know how it goes, though will probably start with the old standby gear and DR’s until I can find some fish.

Decided to take a small detour on my drive this weekend down Lac Le Jeune rd and checked out Lac Le Jeune, Mconnell,Stake,Lodegpole and Walloper all still pretty frozen just starting to open up around the edges. Bleeker was 50% open yesterday as well. Pic below is Lodgepole

Went to Jacko on Easter Monday. Started out strong but died around 1:00. Two of us hooked 13 all except one were between 2-4lbs, some colored some clean. We caught all of them on our flashback(antistatic bag) pheasant tail nymph in less than 3 ft of water.
On the exciting side, I had a visitor join me on the lake after taking a brief respite by the shore. I discovered a nice garter snake warming up in my side bag on my pontoon much to my surprise. We also got blown off the lake around 4:00 – almost didn’t make think we would make it back from the west bay – I swear I was surfing the waves in!
