Not the best news I’ve heard all day but based upon some recent O2 data that I learned about today we may be looking at some bad news for some of our local area lakes. πŸ™ It was a tough winter with early ice on and large early snowpacks. This blocks out light penetration and halts photosynthesis/O2 production. There were also no significant melting events thru the winter, and winter is still hanging in near the end of March. The data analysis is by no means conclusive but does provide fairly reliable indicators for total and partial kills. The lakes with ? are borderline …

Total Kills: Pass, Bleeker, Frisken, John Frank, Allen Meadows, Bog, Englishman?, Hudson Bay, Ida, Isobel, L. Rossmore, Tulip

Partial Kills: Red, Logan, Horseshoe?, McGlashin?, Tom Campbell?, Tsotin

Fingers crossed!

• art vandelay says:

Ouch…that’s a long list.

A real beat-down for the Roche chain in particular. A partial kill is often good for fish size but it can sure make for some slow fishing. There isn’t much worse than sitting on a lifeless lake in the spring wondering if there is even anything down there to take the fly.

“There isn’t much worse than sitting on a lifeless lake in the spring wondering if there is even anything down there to take the fly…”

ya, been there more times than I care to remember … pretty sure you were there on a couple of those occasions πŸ˜•

• Shay Trotman says:

No kidding! That was me on Ernest Lake a few springs ago. Two days, didn’t see a single sign of a fish. What a let down.

• Dave says:

I guess those super expensive high tech aerators on red and bleeker were a lame brained idea.

• Benny says:

Ouch…

• Mark says:

Where do you get the O2 level info from? Would love to find info for hwy 24 area and other Kamloops lakes if possible. Any news on Hyass area or Campbell/Scuitto?? Thanks for the info so far!!

• Bigfish says:

In regards to Red, the south end has low oxygen with the north end reading fair. Steve is hoping the fish have moved north to chase the Oxygen, lets hope that’s the case. last week fish were only seen near the channel and north. The creek in my bay has just starting flowing which is excellent news, its feeding the bay with oxygen. The lake also has a few underwater springs where fish may have moved too.

The Airreator is the craps, no fish swimming around it so it makes me think its not doing its job. (other lakes, their are schools swimming around)

2. Darryl says:

The kill list is too long and contains to many of my hit-list lakes for the year. Ok, ok, but when can we fish. The latest, but not the greatest news from the ice-off simulator:

Six Mile – April 1
Morgan – April 4
Stump – April 9
Jacko – April 10 (based on previous years, this could be very wrong)
Edith – April 21
Red – April 28

There you have it folks. Sitting at about 9 days later than last year. And considering lakes froze about 2 to 3 weeks ealrier this year, not surprised about the fish-kills. Long winters suck!!

3. Clyde Hartzog says:

Any lakes fishable right now?

4. Darryl says:

A year ago today, April 24th 2012 – Six Mile became ice-free. Not the case this year. Should open up mid-week next week. The wait continues…

• Tom says:

LOL Darryl,

I know I am old and easily confused, but didn’t you mean ” A year ago today, March 24th 2012″? (Sorry – the devil made me do it!)

• Darryl says:

Oppps, yes, I meant 2013, not 2012. See, I was dreming it was a year ago…that way I would be fishing right now instead of watching the weather forecast πŸ™‚

5. Johnny says:

When that list of winter kill lakes is confirmed will fly guys be posting them? If so thanks in advance. That’s a long list. I can only hope that a few survive.

• art vandelay says:

Johnny, there will likely be partial survival in most of those lakes. The question is: who wants to sit out there when 50% to 99% of the fish population has been removed. Makes for a slow day…I find that the fishing is usually terrible at ice-off on a lake that has partially killed over the winter (probably because the remaining fish are barely clinging to life). The surviving fish seem to need a couple of weeks to come around.

6. Steve41 says:

I was wondering if anyone might have an idea when the ice will be off Roche lake this year?
Thanks

• Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Here’s what Roche looked like on April 19th last year …

… The way it’s going I think it will be a good week or two more this year but, depending what mother nature has up her sleeve, things can change fast.

• Darryl says:

Roche lake: Steve41 asked about Roche. Just a guess here, but I would say the very end of April / very beginning of May.

I’ve been thinking about White lake this coming weekend. Is there enough open water to fish yet? I don’t want to waste the drive from Kelowna.

• Evan says:

I highly doubt White will be fishable I drove by on my way to Salmon Arm about 10 days or so ago and from what I could tell there was no sign of melt near the edges anywhere and there were people ice fishing. I know someone who lives on the lake so I will talk to him and try to give everyone an update when it’s closer to being open.

(sorry Rob I tried to sign-in forgot my password it’s been so long and got locked out)

• Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Yes Evan please keep us posted re White!

(Check your email, I’ve reset your password. There is also a “forgot my password” link at the bottom of the login page for anyone else that might be in the same boat. Or just email me and I’ll fix ya up! πŸ˜‰ )

• Evan says:

So I spoke with buddy from White lake today and he’s saying it’s still frozen and should be another two weeks or so, how accurate that is I don’t know but he says even though the ice is probably not very safe there are some still ice fishing! I will be going out that way probably sometime next week and will try to swing by to get some photos for everyone. No promises

9. Fishinchicken says:

Please post any white lake info anyone may have or hear about. I am planning on heading up there April 4 weekend.

• art vandelay says:

If I was a betting man I would guess that the April 4th weekend will be a little bit early but there is a chance that the lake will be at least partially open by then (i.e. fishable). If the weather warms as much as the forecast suggests it will by early next week then your timing could be perfect.

• Darryl says:

Art,

I think you might be right. If my memory serves me, I seem to recall that White often opens up around the same time as Six Mile. Right now I have Six Mile opening on April 2nd or 3rd. Morgan on April 5. Does anyone here remember when White openend last year. If so, add about 9 days and that seems to be a good bet for this year.

• Goldmember says:

I had a look through last years ice off forum, and White lake was ice free March 18 last year. Still hoping for Sunday.

• Fishinchicken says:

Thanks for your info on white lake. I don’t remember the exact date but I drove to stump last year and it was frozen( ice came off a few days after) so we drove up to white and it was completely thawed and fishing was above average. We fished by the sunken islands with micro leechs and chronies and did fairly well. Beleive it or not we were in t shirts the weather was so nice. Hope for it to be the same this year.

10. Joe says:

Well, at least Ernest has not been mentioned yet this year. It looks like the entire Roche area took a big hit. It would be good to know if Ernest was tested or was too tough (trees down from the winter) to get into to test. With the cool temps we’ve been having it looks like we’ve got a ways to go with the ice cover on many lakes other than the lower ones that open up early every year. I hope the “kill” list doesn’t keep getting longer.

Anyone been to or heard if Sawmill or Gardom are ice off yet

• Avatar photo CoolDown says:

Im interested in the same lakes πŸ˜‰
Im going to sawmill april 12th and 13th and can update you then
I fished sawmill the first weekend of april in 2012 i believe
You can find a report on this site ( tight lines on sawmill ) and it was still 1/2 frozen
Im hoping by going a week later this year that all the ice would be melted
I will let you know once i had eyes on the lake how far along it is

Thank you
David

• freshfisher says:

Gardom lake was still very frozen today, there is still about a foot of snow in the area.

The Latest Ice-Off Simulator Dates

Six Mile – April 3 (just 1 week away)! I would not bet the house on it, but looks like it will be good to go for the weekend of April 5 / 6.

Morgan – April 5
Stump – April 10
Jacko – April 11 (caution: simulator is often wrong with this lake)
Edith – April 20 / 21
Red – April 29

Note: I do not have info for other lakes. Any updates / photos on how lakes are progrssing would be welcome by all. also, if anyone has been out to Six Mile / Morgan, if they can report back on how the thaw is going that would be great. Simply cannot get out there due to work and family obligations. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

D

14. Jim says:

Your ice off predictions are a lot like environment Canada’s seven day forecasts. The ice will be off when it’s off.

• Darryl says:

What ever Jim, many appreciate the ice-off forecasts. I know I use it for planning my fishing. Considering how well it turned out last year, I thought I would post again this year. Are they perfect, no, but pretty damn close. And considering how Six Mile is progressing I think it may be right on the money again this year. I wonder how many rides out to Six Mile I saved today?

Cheers,

Darryl

• Tom says:

Atta boy Darryl ! I am one of the many who very much appreciate your efforts. I was very surprised at Jim’s comments, and cannot understand his reasons for doing so. Perhaps he was just having a bad day.

Tom

• Mark Y says:

Same here Darryl
Love the predictions, gives us in the lower mainland a date to hope for

• Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

LOL come on Jim everyone loves the forecasts! Keep it up Darryl we appreciate it! πŸ˜€

• Avatar photo Joe says:

Jim must not have been around last year to see how accurate Darryl’s forecasts were. Cool stuff and nobody expects perfection, they just can’t believe how close the predictions were. Keep’er going Darryl! April comes in less than 72 hours!!!
