5 more days of +10 OR higher weather makes me think I’m making the drive to Kamloops for a day.
Using the values in the spreadsheet from time, I found that taking the average temperature of February and March combined was a good predictor of the timing of ice-off for Six-Mile Lake. Using the combined average temperature of these two months, the day of ice off can be estimated as:
96.1 – (4.7 x T)
where T is the average February + March temperature from the Kamloops airport. Using the the data from the Environment Canada website for Kamloops and the forecast temperatures, I have estimated an average Feb + Mar temperature of 1.1 degree C for this year. So,
96.1 – (4.7 x 1.1)
=90.9
So, ice off from 6 Mile should be around day 90.9 on the calendar, i.e., March 31 to April 1. Looking by the photos, it looks like this little calculation might be out by a couple of days, but in the right direction :). The error on these calculations is plus or minus 8 days, but that error should decrease with more years and thus more data contributing to the equation (so far, based on 6 years of data).
I know, totally geeky, but…
I did the same thing for Red Lake = 117.6 – (4.1 x 1.1) = Day 113 = April 23rd π
KEWL! I was wondering when you were going to post. Thanks for sharing! π
What does it calculate for Roche?
I do not have any ice off date data for Roche Lake. If my memory serves me correctly, Roche is usually a week or so behind Red, so my guess would be end of April, start of may, but it Mother nature can swing things a lot through (April), so that is only a guess. If you have a list of ice off dates I could run a calculation to see what month(s) average temperature correlates best with ice-off and then generate an estimate.
Cheers,
Darryl
Dont worry about it this year Darryl. Save the Roche calculation for next year, and send me a private Facebook message before the ice-off contest…?
All kidding aside, this is really cool. May not be an exact science, but pretty interesting calculation for sure.
Cheers,
DC
I ran some numbers for Jacko:
Ice Off Day = 107.2 – (4.0 x T), T = Average Feb + Mar Temp, this year it looks like T = 1.1,
So, 107.2 – (4.0 x 1.1) = 107.2 – (4.4) = 102.8 = Apr. 12 – 13th (again, plus / minus 8 days).
No water showing around the shore at Sawmill as of yesterday.
The road is good though…
Hi Rob, I’m new here and wanted to say what a superb site this is. Thank you!
Welcome Tony! π
Sorry guys I’m still having problems with the image uploader so as a bit of a work around I’m posting to the FB page and embedding from there. If any guys on here are Facebookers feel free to post pics there and embed them here as well. Or you can email pics and I will be sure to get them posted. Hopefully I’ll have this fixed soon, thanks for your patients.
Yesterday (March 27) … thanks Dean B for emailing in the info!

I do really appreciate your posting any FULL ice-off dates on this site so I can keep my spreadsheet as up to date as possible. I donβt mind sharing this info.
Thanks – Tom
Six Mile is sooooooo close & Morgan is pretty much all off (as far as I could see today). Thanks for keeping up the spreadsheet Tom! π
If this is a different spreadsheet than the photo posted earlier by BCFlyguys I would love an excel version! I’d like to add the entries to mine that I have been compiling. And if I have any others you’re missing I can send them your way
If you care to share my email is [email protected]
If not, no worries! Just figured i’d ask
I emailed Tom’s spreadsheet to you. Please keep Tom, and the rest of us, updated with any new info. π
Hello Tom and others,
If I can get the ice off dates for as many years and lakes as possible, I do not mind crunching the numbers and figuring out what temperature (and possibly other meteorological data such as wind speed etc) correlate best with the ice off dates. My job involves developing and using statistical models, so I do have experience doing this stuff, but all models are only as good as the data used to develop them. The more data the better. I would be more than happy to develop these for as many lakes as possible and then posting them on this site with instructions on how to access the data that would feed into them from Environment Canada’s web site. It may take me a while, but i would be more than happy to do this and once done I can update the models when new data comes in (for example, after this year’s ice-off data are known). One last thing, does anyone have any more info on fish killed lakes in the area? Cheers.
Sent you Tom’s spreadsheet Darryl. Thanks for your contributions! So far, unofficially all 02 readings good except Englishman & Tulip … IIRC.
Scuitto … thanks Randy!
“Fished” Morgan this morning. Saw a few moving, but no bites. It was bitter cold with heavy winds the whole time I was there. Was in a u boat (stupid I know), but was my first time out on a half thawed lake. The wind was really shredding the ice, but at least half was still covered. When it took me about 8 minutes to tie a non-slip loop knot to change flies due to frozen hands, I finally decided it was time to go.
Lakes – 1
DC – 0
PS – One guy caught one on his first cast (fellow fly guy possibly???) After the day I had, I felt like flipping him the finger, but I couldn’t lift it ???
As a work around to uploading images until I get the uploader fixed you can now embed any image you like by simply pasting in it’s URL. For example, the image below was embedded by simply inserting …
h t t p://www.yourimagehostingsite.com/subdirectoryifany/filename.jpg
(jpg, png & gif only).
Disregard spaces in http I just needed to kill the link.
Any questions just ask and I’ll try to better explain. Thanks again for your patients!
ps … this photo is old π
Hello fellow fishing fanatics. Was up by Stump a couple of weekends ago and she was frozen solid. Anyone been by there lately? I’d like to hit it shortly after ice off every year but I won’t be in the area for awhile (unless the ice is off LOL) and I was hoping to get some intel here. It usually isn’t too far behind 6 mile and Morgan (last year it came off before them), so I’m hoping it’s not too far off.
Any reports would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Don
Hey Don, my records show Stump off almost 2 weeks after six Mile last year and towards the end of the first week of April on most years. π
I drove out to Stump Lake Sunday March 26 . little bit of water at the edge where the rest area is located.
Rick
I heard Nicola went ice off over thursday, Stump has to be right behind that?
Any new reports on white?
I messaged the resort monday, pretty sure they are clueless they told me 10″ still. ?
That makes sense. A 10 inch diameter piece left in the middle…?
Don’t be too surprised if White is well behind 6 Mile and Morgan. It is lower in elevation but in a cooler climate so on years that are cold enough to build significant ice cover the ice can take a really long time to come off.
Monte today …
Heard Woods off today too.
Hi Rob and the rest of the Flyguys,
I just came back from Vernon and was going to tell you about Monte, but I see you have a picture! It was open at the north, middle, south, and southwest edge, so more warmth and/or a bit of wind and it will be fishable in the next day or two. Swan, in Vernon, was still covered as far as I could tell, but can’t be that far behind, as it looked quite black and geese and eagles were on the ice.
Take care, and tight lines to everyone!
Derek
Hey everyone, I lost a black folding knife at the south boat launch at the far west end of Morgan lake wednesday night. I went back friday morning and it was gone. If anyone has it or knows about it please let me know. Thanks
So the plan is to head up to Stump Sunday after work. Sleep in the van that night,,,,,,,,,,,,
Am i going to have a good Monday or a bad Monday?
All i know is im feeling the itch bad and have to get some fishing in. The Monday is “supposed” to be a glorious sunny day at Stump lake. Do i risk it? Or play it safe and go to Morgan or Six Mile…. Please advise?
Mannn I want to say go try but I really think it will still be locked up. I guess worse case scenario though if you wake up to no open water it’s really not that far to Six Mile/Morgan.
Well, im going to cross fingers and go for Stump! Will be my first time fishing Morgan if it comes to it. Thanks for advise?
sooooooooo??????
Well it was an adventure!!!
First off,,,, make sure you check road conditions and closures before heading for a couple days fishing. Left Port Coquitlam about 5 pm sunday after work and arrived at destination at about 1:30 am. Coquihalla was shut down, had to take Fraser Canyon so that made our decicion for us, Morgan it was.
Was a glorious day at Morgan lake on Monday,,,,very busy. Wasnt used to being around that many boats. Was my first time at Morgan, and had people trolling right past my back casts?. Lots of folks were catching fish,,,,lots of spawners being caught. I got into a few nice fish.
So we never got a good look at Stump,,,,drove by on the way home and looked pretty frozen, but was very dark out. Mabye next Monday, Tuesday i will get some fishing in. I will post pic of the big buck on your FB page.
