Back from Monte once again. Managed 4 Kokanee. Caught a really nice one. I used a fish finder for the first time and it really helped locate the fish. Not to many fish being caught today.

those are some beautiful koks!

Thanks Evan & Shyanne! π
Fishing was great this afternoon on the Thompson using 5 of diamonds orange and yellow/lime spoons I think pretty much anything to get there attention would work. We pulled in 2 dollies and 1 rainbow all between 2-4 pounds and had lots more on also.
where on the thompson did you go? ish area..
I was down by mission flats (across from the airport) go to where you turn left to go up to the landfill but go strait and there’s a bunch of concrete road blocks on the right and I just parked in front of them and walked down and fished off the point watch out for snags close in me and my dad each lost a 5 of diamonds spoon right away
I wouldn’t recommend that spot I’ve been there 4 times in a row and got skunked but I’ve been having good luck up towards lafarge nothing big yet but it’s only a matter of time
I was at the boat show today. Was talking to DFO and she said Thompson was closed until end of June but south was open from chase to kamloops. I was under impression that the north and south were open all year. Guess I was wrong
Thompson River Regs… http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/changes/1113/region3.html
You probably hooked a juvenile steelhead, Any rainbow over 50 cm/19.5 inches (which isnt very big)…in any body of water where anadromous bowβs are found is considered steelhead.
Fished Edith for two hours today, couldnt stay long but we had lot’s of bites and the kid caught a bow in the first half hour. She seems to like outfishing her dad these days! π The fish seemed to be much more active than some of my recent trips.
Worm on a hook did the trick!

Went back again today… super slow start, but just hammering the little footballs all afternoon until sundown…and I lost a real prize-sized Bow, right as I was pulling him up onto the ice which was really too bad…but good fishing! Everyone else there also seemed to be doing really well, Lot’s of fun! π
Someone posted on FlyBC today that Morgan and Six Mile are iced-off, at least partially. Fishable anyway. Let the games begin!
hmm, not saying no but doubt it … will try to check it out tomorrow and report back.
Just reporting what I read. It’s from a guy I’ve talked to lots over the years. It didn’t sound like a joke, but sometimes it’s tough to tell over the internets. Trying to confirm now.
Feb 28, 2010 …….

I’m betting we’re not even close this year but will try to get out and take a look see tomorrow just the same π
Yup, it was a joke that didn’t translate well online. Sorry to post before checking it out further. I remember that those lakes iced off in late February a few years ago, so I “took the bait” on this one.
No worries Christian it’s that time of year when we’re all starting to jones for a little open water around here. Might still go for a rip tomorrow just the same π
I was at 6 mile 2 days ago. ( cabin fever) still winter up their, almost a foot of snow in places and not even a hint of ice melting around the edges of the lake. Probably could still drive on it. But if the weather warms up and we get some wind it could be off mid march if we’re lucky.
Hi Everyone,
I Know with all the warm weather we have been having you are all thinking ahead to ice-off. I work at TRU and have been working on an Ice-Off and Water Surface Temperature simulation model. Although in its early stages, I thought I would provide you with some early predictions for ice – off for some Kamloops area lakes. The model changes from day to day based on new daily weather data, so in no way are these dates certain. A major cold-front, a big dump of snow, and things will change pretty quick. However, I will, if people wish, provide an update once a week or so on this forum. So, as of today, Feb 23, 2013 this is what I have for ice-off dates:
6 Mile (Pat) – March 21st
Morgan – March 23rd
Stump β April 3rd
Jacko β April 4th
Edith – April 13th
Red – April 18th
This works out to be about a week earlier than last year for most lakes. Better than a week later. As I said, I will post again next week if people wish and see how things are shaping up.
Very interesting Darryl! Yes please keep us posted. π
Havent heard of any ice fishing reports lately.. Where is everyone fishing/catching?
Looks like Evan did good at Edith today:

Buddy went to Heffley yesterday and did OK too.
Kokanee still biting at Monte. Going out tomorrow will report how it went.
Did manage 4 Kok’s at Monte yesterday, but it was a struggle. Very slow lots of soft bites. Fish coming through at varying depths but most between 25 and 40 feet. Ice still good hasn’t started melting around the edges yet should be good for a couple more weeks I hope!
Thats cool Darryl, Updates would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Hey everyone I’ve created a separate forum topic for this here so we can keep up with the predictions all in one place. I don’t know about the rest of you but I’m real curious how accurate this is going to be π
I was watching Brian chan on wild tv and he was fly fishing the kootenay river for bull trout using a sculpin pattern and as always he was catching lots of nice fish has anyone used that pattern here on the Thompson ?
caught this beautiful rainbow trout this morning on a worm and a hook. it measures 24.25″ long and 14.5″ inch girth. well over 5 pounds, calculators online put it at about 6.5 pounds. fought it for close to 15 minutes and pulled two other poor bastards hooks out of its mouth, two others lost the battle but im very happy to ice my biggest rainbow ever.

Nice Fish, What lake?
Looks like Edith π
That’s a beauty.
Was one hook a white one? lol
Ice-Off Model Predictions as of March 1st, 2013:
Remember this model changes from day to day with the weather:
6 Mile (Pat) β March 25th
Morgan β March 27th
Stump β April 8th
Jacko β April 9th
Edith β April 19th
Red β April 25th
Thanks for the update Darryl! I’ve created a new sticky forum for this topic here. Looking foeward to further updates!
I’m thinking about heading up to Red this weekend. Does anyone have a report on how the ice/slush is doing? With these warm temperatures I’m wondering if it’s getting worse or if the nights are cold enough to hold a firm surface on the lake. I know the ice will be safe for now, but if it’s getting really wet up there I’ll pass on the trip. Thx.
Was back at Monte today. Caught 2 Kok’s within the first fifteen minutes. That was it. Lost one and a few soft bites. Ice still good.
Has anyone been out fishing?
What’s happening out there?
Thinking about heading back to Monte Monday and I’ll report back.
went to monte saturday. was there for 3-4 hours. 1 nibble between three of us. others on lake were not doing much better.
I went up to Red to enjoy the sunshine today and the fishing was very slow. I got up early to hit the lake at first light and it didn’t seem to matter. I left at noon and had seen very few fish after covering numerous spots on the lake. This could have simply been a quiet day, but I had one question regarding the aeration system on the lake. I have experienced “murky” water at Red (and other lakes) late in the ice-on season in the past and had always attributed it to plant degredation. Red is a clear water lake and I have only experienced limited murky areas through the ice in the past. Today it seemed like a large percentage of the south end of the lake was murky from the big island through to the south boat launch. Could this be a result of the oxygen system being on the lake floor (stirring up some dirt / bebris)? If so this could be a sign the system is working which is a good thing. Otherwise I’m a little concerned about the plant degradation eating up oxygen as there is roughly 18″ – 20″ of ice up there. If someone has any info that would be great. Thx.

Great day at Monte Lake.
Sun was shining and the Kok’s were biting.
Was heading home by 10:30 with my limit.
Ice should be good for another week.
