Guys help me out here – Barometer or what?

Fished Friday starting at Jacko around 9:30, landed a few nice fish early but it never got going and the fishing did a 180 from Thursday per a few guys that were back on Friday cause it was really good Chronie fishing from 11:00 to 2:00 Thursday with a good steady hatch. So we all leave and I go to Edith and it is dead except for a few tidlers and nothing much hatching.. Closed out a six mile in the late arternoon and at all 3 locations I tried the word from everyone was the same “poor fishing with the odd fish” … Thunder storm rolled in as perdicted and Game over.. Fishing was poor at best when the day before it was hot? I just searched and read Ron Newman’s Barometer post and stats … Yestreday weather stations were reporting falling Pressure.. My only clue as to the change..

Any clues or observations from someone? cycles.. weather.. mood ring.. Moon.. Still a great calm sunny day on the water but some “cream” would have really made the day stand out. Thanks Gary

    • Darryl says:

Oh the mystery of fishing. I have been tracking my catches with moon phases, major times and minor times over the past 4 years and have found no correlation what so ever for most lakes, but for one lake that I fish there seems to be something to it. This could very well be chance though. However, what I have noticed is that often – not always – my best days are those days when there is a steady increase in the barometer or that pressure is realitively high but steady. So, in my opinion the moon may or may not be a factor, but barometeric pressure is. And I know that fish should not be able to feel changes in atmospheric pressure given thatt slight changes in water depth bring about much larger changes in pressure. What I think is going on is that insect hatches and other biophysical processes change in response to air pressure and associated weather conditions and that the trout are responsive to these changes. My two cents.

      • flyfishaholic says:

I think you hit the nail on the head Darryl. I’ve heard barometer changes affect fishing, but my “seat of the pants” analysis is like yours. I’ve had great fishing during a storm, and terrible fishing during a steady/rising barometer and vice versa. I believe the fish are responding to the hatches, that are responding to barometric changes. One note regarding fishing being off after a full moon, I’ve heard Brian Chan say that it’s due to there being excess light from the moon, which in turn allows prolonged night feeding, and therefore lighter feeding during the day. This makes more sense to me than there being a direct lunar affect on how and when fish feed…

Thanks Guys I will continue the neverending reserach that makes this sport what it is, a life long passion and a deeper understanding of all things FISH!

Curious if anyone has been up to blue lake yet this year?

    • Avatar photo Steve41 says:

Which Blue lake are you refering to? I have fished Blue behind Glimpse and usually do quite well.

    • knoxsturgeon says:

june of 2013 blue lake was netted by the local native band

      • Art Vandelay says:

As ridiculous as that sounds, and I don’t doubt that it happened, it may actually be a good thing for Blue Lake as it hasn’t really been producing the bigger fish over the past couple of seasons. Thinning the numbers a little should allow the remaining fish to put on more size. Of course that assumes that the band didn’t remove more than a couple of hundred fish from the lake.

    • demooner says:

I have heard that the natives have netted Blue lake for the last 5 years and every year I go back and catch nice size fish.

      :roll:Dont beleive everything you hear.

  3. Dannyboy says:

I am heading to either Jacko or Edith tomorrow. I had very little luck here the past few weeks using my usual patterns. Any recommendations? Hate to spend the day out there in what is now going to be a cold one not hooking into any fish. Thanks

    • Jesse says:

I got 13 at edith today all but 2 were tidlers most were on olive micro leeches close to the weeds. a few little brookies in the mix as well. with this weather changing the fishing may not be hot but you should be able to get into some fish at either lake.

    • Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

I’d go to Jacko over Edith right now just based on the fish size reports coming in. A friend of mine did well at jacko yesterday and said the fish are getting on the chronies pretty good now. As for chronie patterns I think you’ll do well with any of the standards as long as you get the size and depth right. Having said that a simple black N red ice cream cone has always worked well for me there.

    • Dana says:

This might be a bit late to be helpful but my son &I fished Jacko yesterday (Saturday) and did well in 8-9ft of water with #18 chromies. Some fish in the 3-5lb range plus lots of smaller ones. Hatch started around 10am but the fishing didn’t really get steady until 11 or so.

    • Dragon Fly says:

Had great fishing on Friday at Edith using burgundy and olive micro leeches. Mostly small brookies but a couple went to about 2 lbs. Great to see parents out there with their kids fishing off the dock (Friday was a school holiday). Any word on what is happening at Pass and Isobel?

      • Dannyboy says:

Thanks everyone – this blog is a big help. Hopefully I can help one of you one day. Cheers
        Dan

Any word on Big OK ice on/off?

  5. glen8221 says:

Drove up to Roche on Monday last week. I didn’t fish it though, it looked very dirty. Quite a few fishers there but they hadn’t much action . Checked out the surrounding lakes. Some were still ninety percent ice covered yet.Drove to Peterhope. Fishing was ok. Quaded my inflatable into Blue which was about ninety percent ice covered as of Thursday. Caught one about two pounds. It’ll be a while yet.

  6. Mark Y says:

Any word on Murray lake and the road in from juliet?

  7. steve22 says:

Does anyone have any info on Warren Lake in the Hyas area ,I know it is rough access as I fished it many years ago. Just wondering how the fishing is lately.

  8. Avatar photo slashhunter says:

Fished a couple lakes up the Kane Valley last weekend. Both the Upper and Lower Kane Lake were dead, water was in pretty ugly condition. Harmon Lake had the most action, caught 4 out of there. First on a burgundy leech and after pumping out it found lots of silver chironomids. Tied on a chromie and caught 3 back to back. biggest was 17 inches. couple other guys out there catching some aswell.

  9. deesee says:

Fished Logan Lake early this morning (6:00 AM -7:45) before work. Heard there may have been some winter kill, but certainly did not notice – lots of fish jumping / rising. Caught three on floating maroon leech and intermediate line (two around a pound, one pushing 4 lbs). Lake certainly seemed healthy – today at least.

Went up to red lk today. Was tough never caught a fish. Did see two guys catching a ton of fish though Down by the old launch. It was really windy so I didn’t bother to row over and ask them what they were using. The water is gin clear so turnover must be done.

  11. fishinchicken says:

Has anyone on this web site caught fish atat Roche. I was up there to see the dead fish and seen a lot of them. I’ve heard there are still people getting them and they are rising. But yet to hear a success story on the site. I would love to hear that things are all good up there.

    • LT says:

I was there right after ice off. Trolled around the entire lake, anchored in the usual spots. Not a bite. Did manage to see some on thr finder
Im sure it will pickup soon. by looking at the dead ones I can only assume that there are plenty of large fish stick kicking around down there.

    • arkaydee says:

I fished Roche yesterday with a buddy. Lots of fish, big and small in all the usual locations but not a lot of action. The lake is still a bit cloudy, so the fish may still be lethargic from turnover (at least that’s my excuse). Two fish in four hours about two minutes apart. Both on the south side of the small island around the point from the lodge. Both were on #16 zebra chironomids about 3′ down in 7′ of water. They were right along the weed bed and hit almost before the fly had time to sink.

  12. deesee says:

Likely most of us have seen this (as I am sure we are all avid readers of Kamloops This Week). For those who use that newspaper solely for serving up their catch of the day with chips, I have attached the list of local lakes that suffered some degree of winter kill as determined by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Development. It is pretty close to the list posted earlier on this forum.

  13. Tom says:

    Hi Guys,

As promised, today Wednesday May 7th, I toured around Allen Meadows Lake one more time for a couple hours.
Fairly nice day, a little breezy at times, and surface water temp was 49oF.
Hatch was on and the sparrows were doing great, but I saw no signs of fish activity, not a rise or fish jumping.
Nothing on the fish finder except for a very occasional blip, and my guess is these were not fish.
And I did not get so much as a nibble the whole time.
I saw ducks, and geese, and loons. Hmmm – what do loons eat when there are no fish? ( Pardon my ignorance ).
I am no expert, but sadly I do believe I can confirm there has been a Total Winterkill at Allen Meadows.

    Tom

    • deesee says:

Thanks for checking Tom. Personally this is the biggest loss this year. Despite teaching in Logan Lake for 8 years, I only found out about this little beauty last October. I fished it twice before ice-over (monsters jumping everywhere both times). It was going to be my go to lake for after work. Really disappointing.

  14. Darryl says:

Fished Red today, morning was good, lots of strikes and fish on. Died down a bit in the afternoon. The lake was much clearer than last week, but still not as clear as it usually gets in mid May. Turnover is all but done and with the water temperature siting at around 50 things should start picking up fairly soon. I would say next week it will be prime time. I saw no other dead fish today, lots of fish, partial kiil like ever year, but nothing to be concerned about.

    Cheers,

    Darryl

  15. Avatar photo Joe says:

Has anyone else been up to Red? The ice has been off f or roughly 11 days…..it doesn’t seem normal that it has turned. If anyone goes up there it would be great to keep the “turnover report” up-to-date. Thanks Wayne.

    • Darryl says:

      Hi Joe,

Red turned almost as soon as the ice came off. This happened in 2012 as well and had cleared completely by May 11. It just so happens that in 2012 the ice came off on the same date…April 24. Strange, I know, but I too would welcome others observations to see how the water clarity and turnover do over the next few days.

      Cheers,

      Darryl

      • Avatar photo Joe says:

Hi Darryl, hey just so you know I always appreciate your posts and their accuracy. When I posted last night I had not seen your post yet regarding Red’s turnover. I always expect at least 10 – 14 days for the lake to clean up after it turns so it’s good news that it has turned and cleared this early. Interesting times trying to track winterkill reports and their accuracy, as well as the secondary kill as the oxygen is spread throughout the depths of the lake during turnover. So far the news seems to be better than expected on some of the lakes. Enjoy.

        • Darryl says:

Joe, I also appreciate your posts. Fished Red yesterday (Saturday). Weather was crazy. Snow in the early morning, rain at times and even hail. Fishing was on then off then on again. However, when it was on it was pretty fast and furious with very good sized bows. Yesterday they seemed to be in very shallow water (lees than 6 feet), while on Wednesday I was only finding them in 15 to 20 feet of water. Lots of chronies coming off, but I almost fished leech patterns exclusively and still did well.

          Cheers,

          Darryl
