Hey Alex- This Wood Lake you’re talking about…wouldn’t be the one on the other side of Harrison down in the LM, would it? We were thinking of heading there this Saturday for the day…

      • Alex says:

Near Kelowna BC in Windfield Now called Lake country, Wood Lake 🙂 Still slow right now, but by May it should be good. Alex

        • dawn says:

🙂 Oh, okay….thanks, Alex. A bit out of the way for a day trip for us Chilliwack people!!! Thanks anyway!!!

  2. Shay says:

Is there not a way to go back and look at previous comments? I don’t see a link to read any comments other than the one posted above…

    • Rob says:

Should be a pages tab above and below the comments section. I see them on firefox & IE. If you don’t see them try clearing the cache and then refresh or reboot your computer. Not sure if they will show on mobile. Hope that helps … let me know.

      • Kelly says:

Still not showing on the computer either. Tried two different computers. 🙁

        • Rob says:

I’ve received 3 reports of the pages not showing but I see them fine in Firefox or IE. One of the guys it’s not working for is using google chrome. Which browser are you using and can you please try firefox & IE to check if those allow you to see them.

      • Kelly says:

I used IE on both computers. However, it seems to have corrected itself.
        Thanks 🙂

    • Rob says:

Bear with me guys & gals I’m working on it ….

    • Rob says:

OK got it … not as pretty as before and paging buttons are now at the bottom of the page only but I think it’s working across all platforms. Let em know if you have any issues thanks …..

  3. Sulinder says:

Planning a trip to kawkawa lake this weekend, planning on fly fishing for kokanee but dont really know how, if anyone has any info that would be great!

  4. Benny says:

Fished Willard and Barnes over the Easter weekend.

We headed up Thursday and camped at Willard the first night, but had no luck at all on either Thursday evening or Friday morning. We ran into some locals who said that Willard is tricky to figure out and that Barnes was the better bet.

We moved over to Barnes for the next three nights. The ice just finished completely coming off on Sunday. Water temps were really though. Nothing coming off the water. Only had luck dragging around a micro leech, but had about 15 fish all told. Biggest was 16 inches. The lake was starting to turn. Weather was awesome. Great weekend!

  5. Darryl says:

Fished Morgan Today (April 9th) and it was slow. A few guys brought a few fish in, but seemed slower than other days. I hooked one briefly using a large black leech pattern trolled slowly. One fellow seemed to believe Morgan was in turnover, and although there was some floating plant material, the water was pretty clear, but perhaps a little murkier than a few days ago. Could mean the start of turnover, but I took temperatures at the surface all the way down to 12 meters and the surface was 6.7 C and decreased until reaching 4.6 C at about 9 meters then stayed the same with depth. The temp profile suggests that the lake has already gone through turnover and if it has that was the shortest turnover I have ever seen.

    Cheers,

    Darryl

  6. Jim says:

any word on Roche , or lundbom ?

    • Alex luker says:

Frozen solid, lunbum had a thin layer around the outside

    • Darryl says:

Jim, at 1135 m in elevation, Roche will probably be ice-off in around 3 weeks or perhaps a little longer depending on the weather. Lakes at 750 or so meters – like Stump are just coming off now, so it will be a bit longer. Hope that helps. Lundbom is about the same elevation as Roche, so approximate the same time period. If i was a betting man I would say they will come off during the first week of May. Perhaps others have a different view on this…my 2 cents may just be worth that…2 cents 🙂

      Cheers,

      Darryl

  7. AJ says:

White lake in Salmon Arm is still frozen but the ice is finally melting at the edge. The bay by the firehall has some open ice. With this weather it should be only a couple of days before the ice vanishes. MY experience has been that there is a few days of decent fishing before turnover. White Lake seems to have the longest turnover of any lake that I have fished. Quite often the fishing is extremely poor for two weeks. Usually the last half of April. The water goes very murky with the Marl being suspended from top to bottom. May is by far the best month to fish White.

  8. Ken says:

Up to Scuitto this weekend and it is still pretty solid. Some melting on edges. Campbell is even further behind. Will be several weeks before any open water. Should have 4 wheel to get there.

  9. Christian says:

I had a pretty successful day at Stump today, but it was feast or famine. The fish were feeding, but really schooled up. Between 8:30 and 9:30 everyone was catching fish. We were all casting into gaps in the weeds in 4-6 feet of water. In that hour I landed 4, all in the 18?-21? range and fat. Only one was in full spawn mode. After that
it turned off and the fish were nowhere to be found. Most of the rest of the guys on the lake left, but one boat found a concentration of fish in a tiny area. They invited me over and we landed 10 or 11 fish from there in the next hour, all in that same size range. After that spot turned off there were no more fish caught during the time that I was there. All in all it was a great day for me, but I think that almost everyone that got on the water after 9:30 got skunked. The weather was beautiful and the wind was manageable (wind was from the NE, so there were no waves at the north end). There were no hatches and no fish rising, which made it very difficult to find the fish as they moved around. Fly selection didn’t matter. If the fish were around they would hit anything. I caught fish on a Wine Killer leech, #14 black w/ silver rib and red butt chronie, large blood worm, and #16 tan w/ silver chronie. I also had my first double header all by myself. It’s a bit stressful, but it’s a good problem to have. There is a large area of open water at the south end now as well, though it’s tough to access because it’s still mostly frozen between the south end and the southernmost boat launch.

    Have fun out there guys,
    Christian

    • Christian says:

Hmm, not sure where the pics I uploaded went. Do they have to be approved by an admin before they show up?

    • shay says:

What lake were you fishing that was ice free?

      • Darryl says:

Shay: Christian was fishing Stump Lake. Anything at or under 750 m in elevation is open around the Kamloops areas (Pat / 6 Mile, Morgan, Forest, Stump as examples). Jacko should be open within 2 weeks, probably less (my guess about 9 – 10 days).

        Cheers,

        Darryl

        • shay says:

Thanks for the reply. I just bought a brand new Toyota that I’m hoping to get to try out on some lakes in two weeks time. I was hoping for Ricky/Johny/Clifford but I think it might be a bit early for those lakes.

Do you mean Forest up past Williams Lake? Any other rough access low elevation lakes you could recomend would be fantastic. I’m wishing Plateau was open but that won’t be for another month.

          • Darryl says:

Shay: I mean the Forest lake just north of Kamloops along Agate Bay Road, not the Williams Lake one.

            Cheers,

            Darryl

          • Rob says:

HeyDarryl are you sure Forest is ice off?

          • Darryl says:

Rob: The Forest Lake along Agate Bay Road is only at 597 m, so I figured since Morgan, 6 Mile and Stump were off that Forest would be as well. However, this is only an assumption and I should not have wrote it as fact. Sorry about that…does anyone know how that lake is doing?

            Cheers,

            Darryl

          • Eric says:

Hey I went to Forrest on the weekend – definitely covered in ice. Should be at least another week…

        • Ron says:

Darryl, your guess for Jacko is pessimistic by 9-10 days. The ice is off. I fished it this afternoon with about 8 other boats. Was a remarkably calm day for Jacko with a light breeze and small ripple on the water. Chrinomids were coming off and I caught and released a big spawner and a few small ones on a black and red ice cream cone.

          • Darryl says:

Ron: Wow, was I every off on that. Well, in this case I am glad to be wrong. Happy to hear you had a good day on the water. Thanks for the update about Jacko, I am sure you made a lot of us very happy to hear that it is ice off 🙂

          • Lance says:

            [img][/img]

As Ron said, Jacko is 99.99% ice off, here is a picture of it. There is a little bit remaining ice near the south end by shore.

Talked to a fellow before leaving, he said the water’s still a little cold, and not many fish are rising.

Hopefully, it only takes a few days to get the fish warmed up.

  10. toby says:

I was thinking of going to six mile or morgan for the first time. is the best way to go in off highway 1 or the tunkwa lake rd? also is the road rough? is 4wd needed. i will be coming in from kamloops, thanks.

    • Darryl says:

Toby: Coming in off Highway 1 is not too bad at all. It is a bumpy ride at times, but a 4 x 4 is not needed. Half the drive is on old pot hole-filled pavement. The entrance is a little hard to see coming off Highway 1. It is maybe 200 meters or so past the Tobiano entrance on the left-hand side as you are coming from Kamloops. Look for a cattle guard / fence. In Morgan people seem to be doing well on green pumpkin heads, maroon micro leeches, and red / black chironomids. Larger leech patterns (black) trolled slowly also seem to be getting hits. I hope this helps.

  11. Arek says:

went to stump this morning.. group of guy was just slaying them! fish every minute for about an hour! never seen any thing like it.. me and my buddy were right beside them but never got a bit..:( guess there is more to chronomid fishing then just casting it out there…lol that was my first full day ever chronomid fishing….it will come!:)

    • Rob says:

Don’t give up Arek once you get it you’ll be addicted like the rest of us! 😉

    • Christian says:

That’s what I was experiencing yesterday as well (except I was lucky enough to be one of the ones slaying them for a short time at least). The fish are in such tight schools that you can tell where they are by watching which two guys in a small radius have a fish one almost constantly. Then the school would move and another tiny area would heat up.

  12. Shay says:

Has anyone ever camped at Jaco? I’d love to try the lake out early season as it sounds like it warms up too much later on in the year. From what I can find there is only a day use area at the lake.

    • Art Vandelay says:

Overnight camping is not permitted at Jacko. You may be able to camp at Inks Lake (no fish) which is very close to Jacko.

Edith’s ice is going away pretty soon, geeks have already been there waiting. 😛

also, threw a rock to the ice about 50 feet from shore, went straight through 🙂

    Get ready guys!!!

    • Art Vandelay says:

I am finding it difficult to get excited about Edith as the size of the fish has been way down since the winterkill of 2009. Had a great day there last May with numerous fish caught but almost every fish was in the 1 to 2 lb range. Eventually landed one 4 lb fish in the afternoon. My experience there the previous fall was about the same; lots of 1 to 2 lb fish. On a good day before the winterkill it was possible to land numerous 4 to 6 lb fish with the occasional bigger one thrown in. It sure isn’t like that any more.

Does anyone know where the big boys have gone? Is the ice fishery responsible? Or is the lake overstocked? I noticed that they did increase the stocking rate after the winterkill.

      • shay says:

Its all relative. Just get a weight #2 rod with some 3 lb tippet and those 2 lb fish will feel huge again!!!

      • Lance says:

Lots of small brookies through the ice, but haven’t seen any bows myself.
perhaps they should stock some more bows, but regarding to the winter kill u mentioned (i didn’t know that:lol: ), stocking more brooks can be a good way to prevent the fish population from declining. if the size is what u are looking for, maybe it’s a good idea to prompt them to install an aerator if that’s possible 🙂

      • Rob says:

I feel the same way AV. I don’t think ice fishing is the issue because it seems to get about the same pressure as it did when the fish were bigger. Increased stocking could definitely be a factor. I’m thinking optimistically that if you were getting them in the twos last year then we should see them in the fours this year.

        • Art Vandelay says:

I hope you are right Rob. Speaking of Edith brookies: I almost never catch them in the spring! Probably because I am targetting the rainbows over deeper water where you only seem to get one brookie for every 30 rainbows. Fall is a different story as both species move into the shallows and the catch ratio evens out a bit, although the rainbows still outnumber the brookies.

Lance, you should try ice fishing a little deeper (10 to 20 ft) next season to see if you can find the rainbows. Unless of course you only want brookies…

          • ron says:

Spoke with the small lakes biologist the other day when was fishing nearby. He told me that Edith has been suffering from a high PH level which has stunted fish growth. The level was approaching 9 which is similar to Stump. They have started to correct this problem by diverting more fresh water into Edith and less into Shumway. I’ve noticed that the creek is running and the water has come up. Hopefully, the alkalinity will drop and fish growth rates will return to their normal, robust levels.

  14. steve says:

What is the easiest way to get the boat in the water to fish cooney bay?

    • grant says:

A friend and I drove all around the area looking for a spot to put in a couple weeks ago with no luck. As far as I can tell your options are McArthur Island launch and ~8km ride to Cooney, open only when the water is higher, or Tobiano/Savona launch and ride across the lake. Maybe someone else knows a close spot? There’s a nice looking float plane ramp near the airport, however the signs around it say you’ll get towed if you launch a boat there.

    • steve says:

Thinkin of puttin the boat in at Savona. Anyone have luck catchin fish that side. The lakers should be in shallow water right now so want to get in there the next few weeks

  15. James says:

Hey guys, I’m planning a trip out that way next week, any suggestions on campsites, what flies to bring? We’d like to camp on the water and we’ll be fishing from belly boats. Thanks for any advice!
