    Edith Lake Feb 14!

      This is getting freaky! ” alt=”surprised” />

    • Art Vandelay says:

To give some perspective as to how incredible this is for Edith to be that far long at this point in the year: late March would be a very early ice-off for Edith and average would be mid-April.  For the lake to look like that in mid-February is absolutely ludicrous!  Given the generally cool nights and warmish days in the forecast i wouldn’t expect to be out there all that soon, but as soon as we get another really warm snap that ice will go really quickly.  We are easily a full month ahead of schedule!

    • Benny says:

Unfortunately, I see no good wind in the immediate future. That would really be the test of how rotten that ice is! Either way, I’ll be very surprised if we don’t see people on Six Mile before February 28th like a few years back.
I can’t imagine that Monte is very well covered anymore either.

  2. fishinchicken says:

Anyone have any idea the status if stump lake. Even I drove by it Xmas eve it was 3/4 thawed. So I would suspect the ice never got to thick ?

    • Benny says:

I’ve been very keen to drive by or get a progress report, but I’ve just not been able to make the time! I suspect it’s close, and that you’d be correct about the ice thickness falling short of what it would be on an average year. The wind is usually the ice-killer at Stump, but it has been relatively calm for quite some time. The cooler nighttime temps are probably slowing things up a bit as well, although I suspect more daytime damage is being done to the ice than the evening temps are repairing.

    • The Force says:

Likely irrelevant now, but 2 weeks ago it was 6″ ish and fine for ice fishing. It was starting to get some melt water on top though…

    • wayne says:

The south end of stump this year had a solid 12 inches of ice and the North end had a solid 6 inches of ice that is now down to 3 inches on the north end and was opening good along the edges a good jump worth! I suspect the North end will be free of ice well ahead of the south end but a good wind could take care of that quickly

Edith Lake update: Although it was moving along nicely on Feb 14th (see pic at top of this page), Edith has refroze. There was an ice fishing hut out there this morning and a guy walking across the lake. There is no open water at all. I was in Wholesale Sports yesterday and the guys were talking about Edith being open enough to fish from shore. If this was the case, it no longer is. The cold nights have really slowed things down. There might be a nice warm front moving through early the second week of March (long-range forecast) which may do something to the ice, but for now I am not counting on being out in a boat in February or very early March.

    Cheers,

    Darryl

  6. wayne says:

Went to stump today only 2 inches of very rotton ice on the north end I didn’t even chance it! A couple of crazies on the ice at the launch only 2 inches rotton ice their as well. So off to edith I went  it’s been good the last few days and it was never open enough at any time to fish from shore period!! Lots of ice I’d drive my quad on it. The creek is pouring in but not out and man I’ve never heard ice grumbling like that.

  7. Gene says:

Wondering if ice on Monte is still O.K.

    Forecast for Kamloops:

    High of 9 today; Thursday Low 0, High 6; Friday Low 0, High 7; Saturday Low – 3, High 7; Sunday  Low – 3, High 8; Tuesday Low -11, High 5.

Looks like Six Mile may get a chance to open up over the next few days, but potential to freeze if the cold spell next weeks lasts. -11 on Tuesday morning is not good. I wonder if we might be able to get out there Saturday or Sunday??

    Cheers,

    Darryl

    • Art Vandelay says:

Looks like Mother Nature has kicked us flyfishers in the teeth once again…There may be an opportunity to throw a few casts from shore at 6 Mile and Morgan this weekend but i highly doubt it.  The cold snap coming next week is going to tighten things right up.  The good news is that is only supposed to last for a few days.  I am going to predict that 6 Mile and Morgan will ice-off around March 13.

      • Darryl says:

Art, I agree with you…and that little ice-off simulator predicted March 14th for Six Mile way back on Feb 5th. It may be close this year (and probably just a coincidence). It also predicted March 18th for Morgan. I have not run the simulator lately with all the updated weather, but when I do I will post again.

        Cheers,

        Darryl

    • wayne says:

Just got back from 6 mile the Morgan end is ice free I should have taken the boat I could have busted half the lake open no problem the remaining ice is only 1 inch thick. One heavy wind would do it

      • Art Vandelay says:

Interesting that it made so much progress in just a couple of days (with sub zero nights).  I assume you mean the west bay area is open?  Where would you launch?  Or is it open right to the boat launch?
Even if it does open up a little, this cold front will re-freeze the lake with at least a thin layer of ice.  Overnight lows of -10 will skim over a lake the size of 6 Mile quite easily.  But hey, get out there while you can…

        • wayne says:

Yeah the west bay is open to about where the double fence posts are . Definitely not open much at the launch. But with a bit of work u could bust your way up their in no time at all! And yea I think this cold snap is a snag for sure. Let’s just hope the forecast is wrong. A west wind of 20 tomorow so it could possibly open the whole west bay up to the point?

        • wayne says:

Here is a picture my friend paul sent me from last night.

        • wayne says:

And here is the other one

      • Art Vandelay says:

Today’s wind could move some ice around but I don’t think it will be enough to open up a whole lot of the lake.  The cold nights start again tonight and look to last for a solid week…next weekend a good thaw should start again.

  10. Avatar photo Evan says:

Well, It appears the recent weather has put a halt on the ice off progress…Was at Edith approx 3 weeks ago and the amount of open water around the lake was astounding. It has all since refroze almost entirely,  for anyone interested in getting in some last minute ice fishing, It appears now is a good time to do so.

  11. Avatar photo Evan says:

Edith above, and here’s Jacko Today

  12. wayne says:

Just got back from 6 mile it’s almost half open

  13. Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Fish on! (is that you wayne?)

  14. FishinKid says:

Looking to still water fish for the first time this Sunday? Is 6mile open enough still?

whats monte like? Still frozen over?

    • Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Six Mile still about 50% open, Morgan still frozen as of yesterday, I would think Monte has enough open water to be fishable but I do not know for sure … anyone?

  15. RhettHoffman says:

Are there certain lakes that thaw usually befor other lakes? Wanting to go still water fishing next Monday!

    • Art Vandelay says:

The answer to the previous question is that there is a huge variance on ice-off timing for interior lakes.  Some lakes such as 6 Mile (low elevation, high exposure to wind and sun, dry climate, etc.) open 2 months earlier than lakes at high elevation.  There likely won’t be much open water for your Monday outing but 6 Mile is open and Morgan will be a sure bet in the next few days.  White Lake near Salmon Arm and Monte could also be options…not sure about Stump but it could be close.
