Would you guys recommend Stump or Jacko for an inflatable w/ trolling motor? Which is busier? Are either of them catch.and release only? Please & thx,
Jacko is a very windy lake and Stump is one of the windiest lakes in all of North America! Neither is catch and release (both actually have a 5 fish limit I believe but check the regs). If the weather seems really nice in Kamloops then you may want to try Stump as Jacko is going to be REALLY busy for the next couple of weeks. Stump will see its share of people but it is a much bigger lake and can easily handle the crowds. It sounds as though Edith has just iced off so you may want to consider giving it a shot as well. As an added bonus it has brook trout as well as rainbows.
Good luck wherever you end up.
Art
Thanks for the great info Art! Think ill try Edith instead, provided the weather cooperates. Don’t want to take any chances. Will let you know if/how I make out, and report on the ice situation.
As of noon today Edith Lake was 50% free. It’s coming off quick and there is lots of fishable water.
I went up to gardom lake last night for a couple hours and had pretty good luck I landed two on a green leech casting into the shallows. I also had two hits on a glassworm and my brother caught one on a glass worm. The fish were in the 2-3 pound range

Wow! Look at the spots on that beauty! Great fish!!
Anybody ,have some info on Big Bar lake . Will be in that area this coming wknd, should I take the boat? Thanks Dawn
Never a bad idea to take the boat just in case…but, I don’t think that there will be much, if any, open water in that area yet.
Yeah, well, no open water, not making the trip! lol It’s a long way to go from the LM to find it still frozen….sure could use some solid intel….I can deal with partly frozen. I’ve got good warm coveralls!!! (See post below π )
Does anyone know how many lakes around Kamloops are now ice free? Also, are there any upcoming fish derbys in the Kamloops area. I would be extremely grateful for any info someone might provide
Here’s a pic of the one and only bite we got at Stump last weekend….very windy after 10 every morning. But if you get out there early, the lake is quite calm. Just have to figure out what they want to eat! Water was quite cold, 41-42 degrees, couldn’t see any bugs in the water yet. Forgot to punp this one, but it was a very nice fat fish. Wish we could’ve caught a few more, but one’s better than none!

Nice bow Dawn!
Thank you! I was quite surprised to see the size of it. Was pretty quiet until it saw the boat! So was I! :0
took a run to jacko on my lunch break only 2 trucks inthe parking area 1 nice fish head in the lake at the launch
Matt was there today …

… he said chronies in the shallows! π
PS … nice to see you putting that MOBY Kamloops to work Matt!
Yowzers! Nice catch!!! So wanna go out and play with chronies!!! Soon, very soon…..lol
anyone know if red lake is ice free yet?
If Edith is off then red lake should be off or close to it . Their almost the same elevation. Red is 3,330 feet or so
Edith always comes off before Red, probably because it is exposed to more wind, more sun and is a smaller lake. Ice off simulator has been bang on or off by a day or so for Morgan, Stump, 6 Mile and Edith. It was just plain wrong about Jacko. So 4 for 5 it is doing well, and it has Red at fully ice free on April 25th – 2 weeks from now. However, last year Red was about 5 days behind Red. So probably a week or so at the least for Red would be my guess.
My 2 cents
That is supposed to read Red was about 5 days behind Edith.
thanks for the info
My buddy was up to red lk caught some nice fish. The ice has been off for two days now.
He’s a reliable source!!
Wow, Red is off. So much for the simulator. Got some lakes right on and others (Jacko, Red) dead wrong. Did your buddy say if they were brookies or bows? Still can’t believe it is off this early. I timed my work vacation wrong. Won’t be in the area until next week. Damn.
I believe they were nice rainbows.
I checked a lake out last week and it was froze enough to ice fish or so I thought. I didn’t Actualy test the ice, I went back four days latter and it was wide open. I would have bet money on the fact that it was still frozen??? Lots of wind, temperature inversion(ect) lots of factors to consider.
As suspected…..I went for a drive to Red this morning and found it 100% ICE ON. I lobbed a baseball sized rock out from shore and it didn’t even set into the ice. With the current cool temps / possible snow in the valleys forecast I can’t see much more changing up there for a while. I think the ice up there is right about how it should be for April 12th…..Fishpimp your reliable source must’ve meant another lake….and some different rainbows…?
Ok, so Red is not off. That would have been really weird if it was off. Given Joe’s report, the simulator’s prediction of Red off on the 25th or 26th looks more and more likely. Man that would have sucked to drive all the way up there expecting open water.
Sorry guys just going by what I was told. No foul intended. I will have to give my source a talking to. It’s the first time he’s given me a bum steer. He may have been on the sauce!!
No worries Fishpimp. You’re next tip better be a good one though…lol
I think that will be the first and last tip I give unless I go look for myself!!!!!
What does the Ice Off Simulator say about Roche Lake?
I do not have Roche as one of the simulator’s lakes, but will next year. Roche is usually a really close to Red, so I would suspect April 26th – 30th as a guess.
Cheers,
Darryl
Was just up at Roche last weekend and was some water near the shore, but would say its still a ways from being fishable.
Has anyone driven by Courtney in the last few days?
I have never fished courtney. Does anyone know if its iced off, and if it is what to use.
Anyone got any info on ice off on lac le jeune?
should be close
Drive by it all the time and the ice is just starting to come away from the shore.
hey guys was woundering what lake would be better to go to on sat jocko or edith
myself, I would do Jocko . Only to show the mine we still fish that lake.
Is it still safe to ice fish at lac le juene? or is it to late now?
Anyone know of any cariboo/chilcotin lakes without ice, that are fishable? Williams Lake (ewww – dont fish there) dropped completely yesterday (thurs), but Lac La Hache still pretty solid other than small open water at creek by Clancy’s. I know spout is still fully covered, and sheridan area looking a week or two away as well. Hoping to get out again this weekend. Anyone seen Greeny, Rail, Helena, Valentine areas recently?
Managed to get into Edith on Wednesday (thanks again for the info Art – was a GREAT lake, too bad weather had different ideas), and was 90% clear – but water was a chilly 38 degrees F, and weather was HORRIBLE. 20km+ winds, pouring rain – and the odd hail in there to boot. Needless to say, only stayed for an hour or so and left empty handed. But was nice to get back in the water and test out some of the gear. Few other boats there, no luck either. Fish Finder still showing all on the bottom, 40′-45′ range. Go deep!
I wouldn’t imagine those are fish at that depth. At ice-off there shouldn’t be enough oxygen for the fish to survive at that depth.
my buddy and I were out at edith on wednesday and ended up with 8 to the boat. the biggest being about 4 pounds. All fish were caught before noon trolling micro leeches. my fish finder was showing all fish in the top 10 feet of the water column. A good first day out on the water!
Salmon Lake came off April 6th.
What’s fishing at Salmon like? Never been up there…anyone got a good story they wanna tell? Looking for someplace to go next weekend where we can take the trailer…..us LML’s count on you guys for all the good intel!!!
