Worried about the ice now… Just picked up my new tent! Wanted to try it out but looks like it is pretty warm…

hey guys, any reports on how Roche Lake ended up fishing last fall and what might be expected this spring? do you think the average size of fish will be small?

    Thanks

    • wayne says:

I wouldn’t waste my time on Roche !

stump is back to its former glory

    • Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Interesting Wayne, but I wouldn’t write Roche off. The catchables should be somewhere around 2 – 3 pounds but the real surprise may be the survivors that spent the last year with very little dining competition. I did hear that by September of 2014 there were a few 5+’s hooked.

      • wayne says:

I have no doubt that’s the case, I guess I’m just partial to stump. It brings back the good old days and the memories that go with it. Plus theirs rarely 50 boats on it some days u can’t even manoeuvre on roache

Ice Off Simulator – Back by somewhat populal demand. A very premature run of this little model I have developed that correlates mean daily tempertures (actual and forecasted), snow cover and day-length with ice-off for some popular lakes around Kamloops. A vey early run of the model spit out an ice-free (all ice) date of March 14th for Six Mile and March 18th for Morgan.  Will this change? – most likely, but there is a chance some of us could be dusting off our boats early this year. Heck March 14th is only  5 weeks this Saturday. The model is conservative for later this month, but there is evey indication that this El Nino year will be similar to 2010. If that is the case it will be even earlier than the 14th. I seem to remember pics someone posted somewhere about fishing Six Mile on March 4th 2010…now wouldn’t that be nice.

    Cheers,

    Darryl

      Awesome I was waiting for this … thanks Darryl! ” alt=”cool” />

I was just looking at my books and 2010 we were fishing six mile February 28 about 25 feet open water to the ice. Green blood worms were the ticket that early in the season

    • wayne says:

Also in 2004 it was open the second week of February

    • Art Vandelay says:

If the current weather holds for any length of time it will be very helpful in getting that ice moving…still, i don’t anticipate being out there before early March.

      • wayne says:

Yea more than likely. But I can live with that. Not to far away now. At least we’re not under 7 feet of snow like Kitimat and terrace. I know a guy who is doing ok at kamloops lake on chironys right now but he says the wind is making it difficult

I was up at Idabel yesterday, fished 4 hours, caught 7 brookies between 5 of us, only 2 were keepers. There was water and slush on top and the first foot of ice was quite rotten, we actually got rained out and had to leave early, pretty crazy for a lake that sits at 4000′ elevation.

On another note the replacement blades that Canadian tire sells for Swede-Bore hand augers are junk. Lost one blade down the first hole to the shitty made in China pot metal blades that the hardware stripped out of, glad I brought the dull originals which were made in Norway.

Beautiful evening out at Kam lake … where Niko should the old timers how it’s done! ” alt=”foot-in-mouth” />

  7. FishinKid says:

Any lakes that would have ice off yet?

    • Art Vandelay says:

Shannon Lake in West Kelowna…Kamloops area will still be a while yet.  It has been really warm but even the lowest lakes (6 Mile and Morgan) are a few hundred metres higher in elevation than the City.  You could always fish Kamloops, Adams or Shuswap.

    • The Force says:

Yeah, my guess is it will be a while yet for the majority of lakes, however, I was surprised at how much the ice on monte had already deteriorated. Was there last Sunday and there was already a fair bit of melt around shore and around old ice holes. The guy beside me said he tried to get on at the south end and there was 15 feet of open water. I imagine it is pretty much shot now.

    • FishinKid says:

when do you guys think it will be fully clear of ice ?

      • Art Vandelay says:

Don’t get too excited yet…there is no way that Red will be clear of ice before late March, and even that would be highly unlikely.  Typical ice-off for Red is mid-April.

  9. leftcoaster_ca says:

Spent a couple hours at Wood Lake near Oyama today, 3 others there too, no fish, but nice day. Saw a half dozen boats trolling on Okanagan Lake as well so the season soon will here. Wood Lake north of Kelowna is iced but slushy and starting to have a few clear spots at the shoreline.

  10. FishinKid says:

What lakes should be ice off by now ? Or too early yet?

  11. LT says:

Jacko on sat. Still early but getting exited!

  12. Darryl says:

Getting dates around the second week of March for Six Mile and Morgan using the Ice-Off Simulator. Would be nice to be wrong and be fishing the first week…or earlier πŸ™‚

    Cheers,

    Darryl

  13. wayne says:

We should all kick in 5 bucks and get an ice off pool going lol.

    • Avatar photo BCFlyguys says:

Pick a lake … I’d suggest something like Jacko or Edith so it’s close to keep an eye on. Then we need to decide what constitutes the official “ice off” day (all ice off? enough open water to fish? etc. – might be difficult). Figure that out and I can set up some sort of payment link for peeps to get there money in …

Holy $hite Batman … Six Mile lake Sunday Feb 15!

    • Art Vandelay says:

It will be interesting to see what the past few cold nights will do to that ice…the days are still warm and sunny though so it may still be progressing.
