Fraser River Sockeye & Spring Salmon Fishing Extravaganza!

August 29, 2010:

Well I ended my last Fraser river post with the term “it just doesn’t get any better than this“! Since then we’ve made two more trips to our favourite bars on the mighty river and all I can say is “boy was I wrong” … not only did it get better, it got much better … in fact, I think it got as good as it possibly could!

Our first trip was planned for three days and began with us reaching our destination by mid afternoon on day one. Our plan was to simply set up camp and possibly get a few Sockeye before turning in for the night and then work hard over the next two days to try and get our two day limit of Springs and Sockeye. Well plans change and the next thing we knew we were only a couple hours into the afternoon fishing and all four of us had our Spring and two Sockeye salmon! The next morning was as fast and furious as the day before and by 11:00 AM we had once again all filled our quotas! I’m not going to bomb bard this post with pictures of every fish but you can view all of this trips pictures on our 2010 Gallery pages. Here’s a couple snaps and a video that sum up trip one quite nicely!

Most of the Sockeye looked like this:

what a chromer sockeye!

Mio with a beautiful chromer pig of a Sockeye salmon!

yikes!

here's our Springs!

We honestly didn’t have the strength to pull out all the sox for the photo but trust me they were all there and all big, fat and silver!

And here’s a video of Mio with a nice Springer!

Now before I get into trip two, I wanted to share something we learned while fishing these giant salmon on various bars through out the year – specifically with respect to landing success.  Over the year we found that on short bars, or long bars with shallow ends, our landing success was about 70 – 75% when fighting them from shore. Not bad but given the fact that you might only get one or two chance a day at a Spring salmon we decided to try to do something to try and increase these odds. Specifically, we decided that on these short and/or shallow bars we would give up trying to fight these brutes on foot and immediately get in the boat and fight them in the deep water. Our experiment proved successful and our hook up to landing ratio on these two trips went to 100% :) ! Just food for thought – your mileage may vary!

OK enough about that – I’ll get on with trip two!

Dan couldn’t make trip two but JeFF, Mio and I ended up hooking up with Sharky, Peeler and his two boys and newest flyguys Kaden and Jared.  As I mentioned above I won’t flood the post with pictures of every fish but please do check them out on our 2010 Gallery pages.

OK so like trip one I’ll tell you right off the bat that the fishing was great and all the adults filled their tags. Now that’s all fine and dandy but it’s not what made this trip spectacular. What made this trip really special, in my opinion the best salmon trip of the year, was watching the kids succeed in learning about the sport and seeing the look of accomplishment in their eyes and big smiles on their faces as their hard work paid off with each salmon that was slid into the net!

Mio continued his incredible streak with another full limit of four Sockeye and two Springs …

nice!

the fight ........

nice!

....... and the fish!

hang on Mio!

... and a repeat of the whole thing on day two!

... what a beauty!

and there's Chinook #2 for Mio! What a hog!

……. and the Peeler boys both caught, fought and landed their Sockeye and very first Chinooks ever as well!!! :)

way to go dude!

Kaden with his very first Spring Salmon!

and not to be out done by his big brother …

cool!

here's Jared fighting .......

....... and landing his very first Chinook as well!

What a rush! Great work guys! And check out the proud papa too – I’m not sure who is more excited! ;)

WOW! Ok I said it once and I was wrong but I’m going to say it again cause I really don’t think it could get any better than this time! Back to back trips of steady Sockeye and Spring salmon action and we were blessed to get our limits of each on both trips! Top it off with the great experiences that the kids where able to have, getting into and landing their own Sockeye and big Chinooks, and it was smiles all around for everyone! :) If you’ve never taken a kid fishing you really should, it’s like catching your first fish all over again! What a great way to wrap up the river salmon season!  As mentioned, there was just too many pictures to post here but you can always check out our entire seasons photos by visiting our 2010 Galley pages any time you like.

OK, that’s all again folks! Next on the list is the youth hunting season and then some fall still water fishing so stay tuned. Oh, and before we go, here’s JeFF with a good bye kiss for everyone! ;)

he loves me ... he lves me not ...

hey ... get a room!

Take care folks!

…….Rob
