Now there are certain things that I think we can agree on that we want to incorporate in our fly. We want segmentation of the body - usually with a rib material. We want something to represent the white gills and also a red butt seems to induce strikes by fish. The problem is, unless you’re tying some of the big bombers species of the interior, you want all this on sizes #12-#18!
I often struggle to add these features and keep the fly from getting too bulky. This fly is my attempt at “less is more”! I found by (more…)
Well up until now we have focused on the relatively simple “ice cream cone” style chironomid pupa fly patterns. That’s not a bad thing because despite being easy to tie, they are deadly little patterns that consistently fool big BC interior trout! Sometimes, however, the fish are keying in on something very specific and you have to follow suit with your imitation in order to stay in the game! ……. another tried, tested & proven flyguys.net fly pattern – check it out!
OK Joe this one’s for you!
Here’s a cool little chironomid pupa pattern shared with us by Gord and the boys from Flyguys Northern Division! And as good as it is up North, we have proven it successful through out the BC interior as well!

Well as you have probably noticed from the success stories in our recent posts, the chironomid is still, and will be for at least the rest of May and most of June, the go to fly for BIG Kamloops area lakes rainbow trout! So far in our fly tying category we’ve shown you our KKK and Black N Red chironomid pupa patterns both tied in “ice cream cone” style. This next fly, the simple but effective Black & Silver Red Butt chironomid pupa pattern, omits the white glass bead in favour of a black metal bead and white antron wool for the gill. We like to use this style chironie pattern when fishing clear water lakes as it is, we believe, a more realistic pattern than the ice cream cone version that performs better in waters where fish have the ability to really check out the offering or are simply being very picky. It is a bit more complicated to tie but well worth the effort to have a few in your arsenal for just such times!
A very cool and versatile Chironomid Pupa pattern shared with us by Scott Anderson! This fly is an absolute killer when the little limeys are coming off!
Here’s how to tie it!
OK folks here’s another fly patterns guaranteed to produce fish over the next few months or any time that chironomids are hatching. Like the little black & red, the KKK chironomid pupa works great in all the best fly fishing lakes in the BC interior AND it’s durable, simple to tie and effective!
With the arrival of May, a peak month for chironomid fishing, we thought it would be appropriate that the next fly pattern in our series of fly’s for the best fly fishing lakes in the BC interior should be the black & red ice cream cone chironomid pupa.
