Thursday, July 21st, 2011
....... fish on!

Summer time fly fishing in the beautiful BC Interior!

By mid-July, the quantity and frequency of our “hatches” will be past their seasonal peaks. Those bugs that come to the lake surface to turn into adults (Chironomid, Mayfly, Caddis, Dragonfly and Damselfly) will all be hatching in numbers below the annual average for the rest of the year.

That doesn’t mean that it is time to put away your fly rod (more…)

Early Spring Fishing, Kamloops Style!

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011
bbrrrrrr.......

....... come on ice off!!!!

Well, it’s the end of February in Kamloops and I, like many others have had my “early ice-out dreams” dampened by the latest cold snap. The bulk of the Interior’s stillwaters are likely locked up in winter’s grip for another month and a half, give or take. If I was not the optimistic (yeah, right), resourceful (or is that resourceless?) hopeless angling addict that I am, I’d mope around town talking trash about everyone that has had a chance to go somewhere warm and sunny this winter. Luckily, I’ve been around the proverbial block a few (too many) times and have been lucky enough to learn some early spring angling opportunities that have (mostly) helped me from becoming a grumpy ogre at this time of year. In the pursuit to bring happiness to all anglers that enjoy the southern Interior’s angling bounty, I will share a few locations that have potential to offer opportunities early in the new year. ……. read on for early spring fly fishing opportunites in the Kamloops area!

Turn Over & Lake Stratification Made Easy!

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

For many of us some of the terminology and slang associated with our sport is extremely confusing. “Turn over” is one of those terms and every year, especially during the winter when fishermen are anticipating ice off and dreaming about spring fishing, we get a lot of questions about it and its relationship to fishing. What does it really mean and, more importantly, how does it affect us as fly fishers. Of all the answers that we have seen, we feel that the following by Todd Oishi does the best job of explaining it all!

……. continue reading to learn how understanding turn over can make you a better fisherman!

How to Bottom Bounce for Sockeye Salmon on the Mighty Fraser River!

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The Sockeye salmon is arguably the highest sought of the five species of pacific salmon. Their deep red rich flesh is highly desirable amongst fisherman and food connoisseurs alike. Sockeye range in size from 5 – 10 LB’s with the odd ones coming through at upwards of 15 LB’s !

Mio with a nice silver Fraser River Sockeye salmon!

Fraser River Sockeye fishing is unique. It is an abundant fishery where retention of fish is usually permitted and this is a good thing! :D There is nothing better than enjoying a fresh sockeye, which you actually caught yourself, with family and friends. Unlike other salmon species, however, the consensus seems to be that Sockeye salmon rarely feed or strike at lures once they begin their freshwater trek through the Fraser. This behavior limits the fishing technique required to catch them to a highly controversial method. The purpose of this post, however, is to explain how to bottom bounce for Sockeye salmon … if you would like to comment on the ethics of the technique you can read this post and share your opinions there. So … without further ado, if you want to catch Sockeye salmon on British Columbia’s mighty Fraser River then you’d better learn how to bottom bounce!
